Does this look like a good deal for me? It's radio internet. Currently I am running 1.2-1.6 mbps download, and 1mbps upload. $90 per month for 15 gigs via satellite.
Satellite internet was a bust up here as the service was fraught with many interruptions and the set up equipment was very pricey.
Radio internet can have a lot of latency issues, which isn't a big deal for most people, but if you need to use something like VPN it can cause a lot of dropped connections.
Estimate tonight from radio internet, I went for $60 per month, with $160 initial equip install. I was hoping for more savings, but I want to give this a try. My satellite internet is 50% at most, and I like the fact of supporting another local business. I will report in a month or so after it's installed and running.
I've used a wireless ISP for a few years now. I pay $50 a month for up to 1.5 meg download and up to 768k upload. No data cap. It's not the greatest speed, but it's better than the satellite chit I had before. Latency is low. I can VPN into work and it zips along pretty good. It bogs down quick when multiple people try to access the net at the same time. If something terrestrial were available here, I'd switch to it, but the local provider (starts with an A, ends with a T, has a logo that looks like the Death Star) won't sell DSL to new subscribers in this area.
Thanks! I am aware it may be slower, but the owner believes it will be higher than what I have now. Also, no cap on it either, so I can set it to down load a movie for the lil one before bed and let it run through the night while we sleep. Can you tell me more about latency? I do not understand what a VPN is. 2000-2010 I would log in for work into my corporate website in another state, is that what a VPN is? I do not do that anymore, so I hope that would not be a problem for me. If it is not equal or better than the satellite I have now, I can always go back. I drool over comcast that freinds and family tell me about with the speed and lower prices, but they also complain too. PS, how do get television?
Latency is round trip delay that the data packets experience as they traverse they network. If you go to speedtest.net, one of the tests is a ping, which measures the round trip delay. I usually see 30-60 milliseconds on my connection. On satellite, you may get upwards of 400-500ms. VPN is a virtual private network, usually client software that allows you to tunnel through the public internet to your internal corporate network. When I had HughesNet, I couldn't VPN at all. I kicked them to the curb in 2009, so things may have changed since then.
That is definitely satellite. For comparison a terrestrial connection from NJ to CA will be about 20-30ms, Europe will be about 100ms. Think of latency as what it is like talking to someone on a cellphone when you start talking over each other. (or when you are face-face and you can really see the effect.) One of you has to stop to let the other guy get his piece in because of the delay. It shouldn't have a big impact on downloads, think of them as a big freight train coming down the tracks. They just lumber on. But it will have an impact on real time things, like playing games or skype, when delay can be heard or seen because information needs to go back and forth.
Can you help clear this up for me? The meaning of terrestrial? Logically I thought DSL landlines and cable like comcast, but the place I am looking at radio interenet also uses the word "terrestrial". I'm meaning physically wired or fiber. I've never dealt with wireless delivered from ground based stations. 700ms latency is similar to what you would see from a satellite connection.
