Interesting Quadrant Chart

Just proves the numbers really aren't meaningful or prove any point. But the question about why wasn't BK on the chart is interesting, because they are clearly a competitor to the same market, and (I think) BK would actually look poor on that chart, by their own numbers they publish on their site.

What would be really cool, would be if someone (like consumer reports) actually did a consumer reports like chart, with all of the meaningful metrics. You know the ones that have all the little circles that are either filled in or not, depicting 5 levels of good or bad for each item.

I wonder of someone has done one of those.

Can we come up with a list of the top 10?
Ease of loading
Ease to empty
Ease of operation & control the burn
Heat out put range.
Burn times
Heat movement/fans
Glass door clean? .?

Come up with more &/or better ones?

 

Can we make one, have each of us fill it out for our stove/s we are using.
Grade 1 poor thru 5 excellent. (1 thru 10 )
10 , 15 or so things to grade.
Then a little blurb for comments of good thing you like
Bk easy to control the burn & heat output with the thermostat

& things you'd like to see improved.
Like the smokey glass on the bk & smoke out the top of the door on reloads

 

Add maintenance to the list.

We tried to get it going. I fanned the embers pretty hard, not many hot coals got going.
So did Brian.
Hope no one took Brian & my jibbing & jabbing for more than it was.
We were having fun in case someone thought it was more.
I like/follow Brian's thread on his Woodstock Beta testing & he follows my BK operation & performance.

Of course my BK has been proven & he's still in the test mode. LOL

 

All of us on the east coast went to sleep. But I think this is a good idea.

Some others are:

Capacity options - small/med/large categories
Clearances
Install flexibility - top flue exit/back flue exit
Wood loading flexibility - Top load, front load, side load - Side load, left/right option
Attractiveness

Another thought, there needs to be a weighting factor multiplier to each metric, as some are going to be much more important than others for each buyer. For instance, some people have clearance as critical need, others not so much, so top exit/rear exit is or isn't important.

This could be a very interesting chart. Another reason for weighting, is course some metrics are so subjective as to be only set by the buyer. Example: attractiveness - some people would call a Woodstock Fireview ugly (or course they would be wrong ) others would call it beautiful.

 

Ease of operation and control, quality of build, and how well it heats a home similar to one's own are to me by far the most important factors. By far. I would like to see data on actual temperatures achieved in the same condition in similar homes by different stoves. That's the only metric that I think is REALLY subjective at this time. We just don't have factual comparison data. We have statements about heating ability from people we trust, but we don't know how B's stove would do in A's home. Having that information would be immensely helpful in the stove shopping process.

Just be as honest as you can , we're human, some bias is expected.
There are thing about the BK model I have that I 'd like to see improved on.

See a problem with "Burn Times". I assume you want to know what they are, as well as how important & how your stove rates. Burn time may be very important to you and to me, but my need and wish may be for a 12 hour burn time, while your need and wish may be for a 24 hour burn time.

 

They are not there to provide meaningful information. Control yes. Red tape, for sure.
