Interesting article on alternative heating

LOL! Good article Raybonz. How did you end up reading this in the Watertown Times on Sunday Morning? I am just curious. With you being from Mass.? That is funny. I posted this over in my "What's up today bullchitting thread." at like 10:45 that morning after I read it. I see you posted it before me at about 10:30. You beat me to it!

 

Well, for some reason I decided last week to start looking at wood usage. Yes, there are a lot of factors involved with burning wood but I wanted to do a general research project. So I have been randomly surfing the net. Picking up comments here and there about how many cords people go through in a winter with various metal and masonry stoves. I am finding the average to be around 4 cords a season. Now the claim of rmhs is that they will use 80-90% less wood. I have only found that to be the case for one or two people. Also, an issue to consider is that rmhs are diy projects. I have seen some that look like they are held together with tape. Those don't perform well at all.

All in all, there is radiant and direct heat. You have to choose what you want. I also believe that there are so many outside factors that contribute to how well a stove will perform. For instance here, my place is an old farmhouse with terrible insulation. It takes more than it should to heat this place. I could cut that in half with proper insulation.

There is so much new technology coming out among the metal and masonry stoves that it is possible under certain situations to have a level playing field. Stove choice is a personal one more than "you will cut your wood usage by 80%".

But then, maybe I am completely wrong.
