Our health insurance is not silly.......... $967.00 per month for one adult and one child, no medical conditions. I just paid it last night, wow that hurts losing a grand once per month!
When we first moved here and the insurance guy saw the old buck insert during his walkthrough, he said no problem. Little did he know that it was an old fire hazard slammer. We didn't even tell them we got a new stove. As far as they know we have a no name wood stove.
Mine was a steel prefab open hearth but rusted out due to no chimney cap. Down here their main concerns are Tornado's and as long as I have auto home & life with them, I won't get dropped - they just like the checks is my gathering
When I bought my house in 2001 I had a heck of a time getting it insured because it needed a roof, along with a lot of cosmetics. USAA wouldn't touch it until the roof was replaced, and I couldn't close on the mortgage until I had insurance. I found a 'no name' insurance company that wrote me a 6 month policy, closed on the house, then I put on a new roof, painted, replaced carpet and got a policy from USAA no questions asked after I sent them pictures and receipts. Funny part was they didn't seem to care about the two masonry open fireplaces that were very well used with missing chunks of brick and liner and about two inches of creosote covering the whole thing, but a water stain on the hallway ceiling was a show stopper.
That is approximately what we did. We initially tool high price ("rated") insurance just to get it. Then applied to and was rejected by several companies due to the wood heat, pre-EPA woodstove (which has a UL rating, go figure), lack of thermostat-control, etc. This latest policy accepts all that, but there was the unpainted eaves problem.
