So i also had my garage doors replaced this past week as well. last year one of the panels bent from the opener going haywire. They were soot'ed up and needed work anyway. I had the option to replace for just few hundred more than repair. so i replaced. I went from R value of basically nothing to R17 doors with full seals all the way around.

I know it was kinda warm out today, but I'm ready to turn my stove off. It's too hot in here at 1am and i've had it idling on 1 for the past 36 hours. I can't sleep. It's down to the upper 30s now and normally it would be chilly in the house on setting 2. (65 ish). My bedroom is over the garage.

Impressed with how much of a difference little things have made.

My bedrooms are also over the garage and I also need to do something with the garage door. The door itself is fine (or as fine as a 1960's era door can be), but there are pretty good sized gaps between the block foundation and the frame for the door.

I keep flirting with the idea of building a detached garage and annexing the garage as part of the house, so don't want to put money, time and sweat into sealing up the door if I end up just ripping it out of there anyway. And at this point, the garage isn't even used for a vehicle since my SUV is too tall to fit thru the door, or under the main support beam that runs across the ceiling.

I've used that and I am such a spaz that none, or at least very little, gets where I want it and a whole lot goes where I don't. Heck, just keeping the straw thing in the nozzle causes me grief (and is a losing battle most times). Even caulk is pretty iffy for me to control in any manner what-so-ever :(

Yeah, pretty sad. Still may try it again, just because I haven't made a colossal mess in a while :D

How funny snowy, we do the opposite here, I open the windows to let heat in instead of running the pellet stove during the summer :picard:

Looks like a storm window is inside the room instead of been outside where it should be:whistle:

B, this sounds great. I would like to do the exact same thing at my house. Our bedroom is above the unheated garage, and I think installing insulated garage doors would go a long way toward making things more comfortable, just as you described. Not only are our doors un-insulated, but there are large cracks / openings around the doors as well. Can you give me any details about who you went through to do the job, and approx. cost? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Me too. Although I may go with building a garage (if I win Lotto), it's more likely I'll need to go thru the same thing.

The guy I used is a local contractor/garage door specialist. Pretty sure he mostly stays in town. I imagine anyone local to you can do similar. It was 750/door for the door and installation /tuning, and since i have 2 bays X2.. My dad knew the guy from high school-- not sure if that mattered price wise though.
I could pm a name if you want, but i'm pretty sure he doesn't travel beyond greater bristol.

    The doors are pretty basic.
probably similar to: Clopay Premium Series 9 ft. x 8 ft. 18.4 R-Value Intellicore Insulated Solid White Garage Door-HDP20_SW_SOL - The Home Depot

and looking at the price of just the door itself, hiring a pro was the way to go considering i got them installed for cheaper than i could have just bought the doors myself and then wonder what to do with the old doors (he hauled away).
