I have not bought one yet. I have a nice little shop vac, it's old, but works good. I use it for cleaning around my bench. I guess I was thinking of the fire thing and not wanting to wait for the stove to cool down, and waiting longer for the ash to cool. I guess there is not much in this shop vac to worry about though.

You'll find in the fine print, that even Ash Vacs cant suck "Hot" ashes or "Coals". They were only designed for warm ash.

A shop vac, with a HEPA filter and a Drywall bag (Fine Filtration bag) with keep the unit from spewing ash all over inside the Camp.

The drywall bag makes sure the HEPA filter stays cleaner longer.

Im on yr 3 or 4 with my HEPA and it still looks new. I just change the bag when full (make certain you get the Fine filtration bags/ the Shop vac brand is yellow, white is med filtration).

Here are pics of my smaller unit I use 90% of the time. I have a 6HP / 18 Gal unit equipped with HEPA and bag also. ..

This one is a 3HP and 6 Gal unit. When empty and clean it is super light and sucks like..... It sucks good :) lets just say that.

I had a Ash vac. It had a short hose, and I got rid of it after 2 uses...

I do the same a dex. A hepa filter and a drywall bag. Hepa is there jic the bag decides to rip. The fine dust will go right thru a standard filter. I haven't had the bag rip yet, But its good insurance!

I brought my old "bench" shop vac down to the camp. Took it all apart and cleaned it out real well. It has a two filter system. I works very well cleaning out the pellet stove. I just wait for a while for the stove to cool down. After it goes through it's shut down mode and turns off the stove is pretty cool at that point. Then I wait another 2-3 hours after that. No problems and the filters keep all the ash in the vacuum. It is a fairly old one, I would guess from the late eighties, maybe early nineties. I will take a picture some day when I am down there and post it in this thread.

Shine a bright flashlight near the exhaust of the Shop vac. If you see anything being expelled, then you may want to upgrade to a HEPA filter (and a Drywall/Fine filtration bag).

What type of dual filtration does it have?

I really don't know how to explain it. I am not much of an expert on them. The inside filter is like a foam, maybe a 3/8" thick that goes all the way around. And then there is a bag that goes over the top of that. I think it is white.

Yeah, the ash, is gonna flow through that like Butter on a Biscuit! !

I'd definitely look into at least a HEPA, but the bags keep the HEPA like new for years!

That's odd. My wife and I have been surprised by how well it keeps the ash contained. I have used it to clean the stove twice now. And I don't see any ash coming out. Is that why I'm pooping the color of ash now? :emb:Just couldn't see it, but it was there. :D

I have a sears shop type metal vac that looks like r2d2, with the HEPA filter, does the trick. I just take the filter out and bang it against a tree, back like new!

Well it was -18° at the camp this morning! The stove had been left on 4-4 last night. It has been burning great. The camp was 40 degrees. o_O I turned her up to 6-6 and dumped another bag of pellets in. Then off to work for a 12 hour day.

I changed them back to the factory settings after I figured out I had the wrong stat! LOL So I think that is 1-4-1. Whatever factory settings were. She cranks some serious heat when not stuck in low.

You might like 2-5-1 even better....should keep the camp a little warmer.
