First make certain you have that stove dialed in and then: use the ash Luke, use the ash.

    Gas,

    How long you been burning?

A bit of ash applied to a damp cloth does a very good job of cleaning the crud off of a stove's glass.

My experience is when you burn on low, the glass gets dirty. When you burn on the upper setting, the glass stays cleaner for a longer period. My stove's glass is black half way down on day three. I vac and brush the inside every 3 days whether it needs it or not. I use a plastic putty knife with the vac to clean the glass mist of the time. Only needs the damp paper towel every couple weeks. Avoid using window cleaners. I never get anything but loose ash on the glass.

Crudded up glass occurs on smoke dragons and other wood burning gizmos and the use of wood ash for cleaning the glass came from the wood burners guide to cleaning up messes made by the stove.

Yup. First Pellet stove. The glass gets dirty quick. Probably from leaving the stove on 2 - 2 setting. But I am keeping the camp at high fifties or low sixties on these settings. And I don't even need it that warm. But will leave it there at your suggestions. No biggy about the glass. Do I need to wait until the glass is cooled down to clean the glass? What do you guys usually do? If I want to clean it every day when I check on the stove can I just open the door with stove running and wipe it quick with paper towel that is slightly dampened? Then close the door? Or is glass going to be too hot and take a chance in .........

I will see on my next batch of pellets as well if it has anything to do with the pellet type. There seems to be a lot of little popping that goes on with small embers and ash flying everywhere when pellets drop in. I will be through these six bags by Tuesday and am going to try another 6 of a different type.

Gas.....your glass might be sooting up because of the low burn. What pellets are you burning? When I wipe the glass when it's hot I just go over it quickly with a magic eraser....when it's cool just a bit of water and paper towels. One thing you can try to ease up on the sooty glass is to bump your LBA up one and see what happens but like I said earlier, too much and you're sending heat out the vent.

Ya, I don't really want to turn stove up and use more pellets and have camp be warmer when no one is there.

I bought the Green Team (or whatever they are called) pellets that Lowes is selling. Next I think I will try some Curran premium blends and see how I like those.

    Gas,

You need to spend some time at the camp dialing that stove in, the fuel/air ratio might be a bit off for the pellets you are burning. You might be able to run that stove on hi/low (if the stove allows) or on/off with a t-stat (with swing settings) and cut your pellet consumption. The hi/low operation would require that you get the stove to operate reliably on heat range 1.

Ya. Thanks for the suggestion. It is appreciated. You guys have all been a big help. I need to install a thermostat for it. Then set it on hi/low and see how it does. I don't need the camp to be high 50s or low 60s. So hopefully with thermostat wired to it and set at 45 it can go between high and low. It will be interesting to see if it burns more pellets that way rather than just being left on 2.

I am swamped with things to do so I just got it up and running. I will probably install a thermostat for it on Tuesday when I have some time. Booked solid until Tuesday. Then I will be able to watch it for a few days after I install it. I have not tried it on setting 1 yet because I was not going to be there, just going down and checking on it. So I set it at 2 at a recommendation from here and have not really had time to hang around and see how it does on 1.

When you set it on the stat, you can set your "High" setting at the 3 or 4 you have now. Level 1 is your "Low".

But as Smokey stated, you need to set it on 1 manually and watch it for about a day (12 hrs). Go work uo there one day and set it to 1. Check on it periodically. If it doesn't go out, then your Good to Go :) If it goes out? Then you need to bump up the LFF a notch or two.

Shouldn't burn more pellets on a stat. Especially if you set your "High" setting pretty low. If you dont need a lot of heat, then there is no Need for it to BLAST when the stat calls for heat. Just a little higher burn to slowly bring the room up to temp. Then go back to Pilot/Maintenance burn (Low).

About 23 degrees on my back porch this morning. The camp was at 52 in the room with the stove and about 48 in the back room. This stove is working great so far. The blower is really doing a nice job of circulating air through the camp.

I cleaned it out last night after burning for six days in it. A decent amount of ash, but I have nothing to compare to because this is my first pellet stove. Switched over to Lowe's other kind of pellets and we will see if there is any difference.

I'm going to buy half a dozen bags of the mixed blend first and see how they work. I will stop today and buy the mixed blend they have and ask them if they can order me the softwood pellets and see what they say and how much more it is for them. I just stopped last night at Lowe's for something else and picked up four bags of the other type they had. They had a different type of the less expensive ones they were selling last week.

Can you be more specific on the names of the pellets you've bought so far from Lowes?

The first six bags I bought and burned through over the last week were Green Team Platinum. The next four bags I bought were 1 of the Timber Heat and three of the Nature's Own Fuel. They had run out of the Timber Heat, at least I thought, and had the Nature's Own Fuel out this time. (The other night.) Today I am in there and they have a whole pallet of the Timber Heat out. I guess they just bring out whatever they have next in the stack out back. Not sure. So the Green Team Platinum is a hardwood pellet, and the others (Timber Heat and the Nature's Own Fuel are a blend. At least that is what someone there thought. The bags of the cheaper ones do not say if they are hardwood or softwood or a blend. They only say premium pellets, low ash, etc. Oh well. I will see how they burn. My stove doesn't seem to care so far. The Curran blends will be next after it eats through the four bags of cheaper ones from Lowe's. The Currans were same price as Lowe's cheaper pellets. 4.38 a bag by the ton.
