Heh, I've got a few to get resharpened as well, and I'm only 20 minutes away.
One of those things I don't think about till I pull it out to use them.

Thick vs thin, or cross grain vs with grain?

Well I don’t want to take any credit since it was a recipie in a lodge cookbook I got with the Dutch oven. I will say though you core the apples, not all the way through though! Then stuff with slivered almonds and raisins mixed in cinnamon and nutmeg. Then they get a mix of water, honey and orange juice concentrate over the top to bake in.
The whole core the appl but not all the way through wasn’t easy! Tried a knife and ended up reverting to a melon baller to scoop it out. I had thoughts of a 7/8” auger bit in my drill though....:dremel:

Just use the heck out of it!!! A lid lifting hook is definitely a good tool to have with it. If your going to run it with briquettes a charcoal chimney is also a great investment as well as a set of longer tongs.

It is done and gone, And thankfully all the people who consumed it are as well. I failed and didn't get a finished pic but it turned out really good. About three hours with heavy smoke at about 275, briquettes and two hunks of hickory.
