The problem with real efi on chainsaws is the weight. In a car or sled, an extra 10-20 lbs worth of electronics doesn’t mean much. That’s why there are no actual physical MAF, barometric, temperature, or oxygen sensors in a chainsaw. There is a temperature sensor in the coil that senses engine temp, but not ambient air temp. The coil works with the carburetor to find the maximum rpm and optimal ignition timing for the situation at hand, and makes sure the system is operating within the preset fuel parameters. It’s quite similar to the electronic carburetors on vehicles in the late 80’s.

The current efi model also has a temperature/pressure sensor in the crankcase, but still no tps, maf, or oxygen sensor. It searches for the highest rpm and adjusts accordingly.

Except it's not even more than a few ounces on EFI sleds now. No battery is required. Cat came out with batteryless EFI in the 90's. The microprocessor that was on the Yamaha smart carb( which was a regular mikuni flatslide tm38 carb which was common in sleds) didn't need a battery either. Just a little pull on the recoil was enough to power it, and they defaulted to a standard fail safe mode to allow you to get home in the event of a malfunction. That Polaris early EFI like we had, if the battery died, you are SOL. It would quit running because it needed the battery. That happened to us once with ours. Cat started the batteryless EFI with a powerful stator. The whole industry uses that now.

I really don't get why people are getting their shorts in such a wad over a chainsaw thread being posted in the woodpile...I really doubt any of y'all have burnt one stick of firewood this year that was cut with a crosscut saw...fuel injected vs carb'd saws seems like a relevant topic...its still 2020, there's plenty of other (much bigger!) things out there to be upset about, if that's what blows your skirt up...

I got the rest of the year off for making firewood with chainsaws, but it looks like it’s going to be wet.
Wasn’t that long ago, you could pick up a decent car for the cost of a 500i.

Less...I put 125,000 miles on a 1988 Ford Tempo that I paid $200 for (from a local used car dealers back lot) never any major issues with it...just typical battery, brakes, exhaust, tires, etc...by and large, cheap used cars went bye bye after the cash 4 clunkers program...but anyways...yeah, 500i :makeitrain"

I see potential problems with skirts and shorts. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm just waiting for the wood cutting app to arrive for my phone. I hope they are working on it. These things keep doing more and more. Phone, camera (still and video), flashlight, stereo, filing cabinet, music collection, tv, vcr/dvd, gps... .

I'd be cool with a light saber to cut trees in the future. No chain to get dull.
