That tree looks like a problem opportunity just waiting to happen. I would go after any of those trees anywhere in your yard that is a threat to your home.
Lucky that leaner was a long ways from anything that it could damage besides the fence and fountain of course. They had to drop everything onto the neighbors yard. I told the tree service to leave the trunk so I could still play lumberjack. Got it looking ship shape now.
Not sure how many of you remember when we helped a young man (Sam) with his old car. He had worked with my wife and the car was in sad shape and he couldnt afford to get it fixed. He comes from a bad family situation but is really a good kid. We've been helping him over the past few years, and he's really done well for himself. We asked him to come over and help load branches. He immediately came over to help. As I limbed the branches I asked him if he had ever run a chain saw. He hadn't so I gave him a lesson in running a chainsaw. After we took a few pictures he asked us to send one to him so he could show his girlfriend
That ought to impress his girlfriend, as opposed the men who buy a lumberjack shirt and think they're all that.
For sure! Plus learning to trust and appreciate a kind male role model. Learning to start an engine.....those steps will carry on to all kinds of OPE. WOW schlot, WTG.
That's awesome schlot, you may not even fully realize what that experience means to the young man. I'm certain he looks up to you. I've worked with kids of his circumstance for over 25 yrs and it's amazing the light that can come on just having a role model and trust.
Thanks all. My dad was on his own, working as a hired farm hand from the age of 13, so I really like to help someone like Sam. Time to sharpen my chains for tomorrow, grab some dinner and find that ibuprofen.
You are opening windows of opportunity for that young man. Good for you. If he turns into a worker, you will know your help went a long ways. Just think, those good things he can learn and pass on to his offspring.
I surprised my bride this morning with a little wood carving. She liked it....and maybe it earned me a few brownie points to boot.
..... Nice touch there schlot ! Now go get that picture printed off and framed.... More brownie points....
I hope that tree carving lasts for many, many years. Around these parts people used to like carving on beech. We had a huge beech here until it finally gave up the ghost. My wife's brother carved on it when he was in his early teens. He is now 75. The tree has been dead for about 10 years now; maybe more; I don't remember for sure when it finally toppled over. I remember it being over 4' diameter but don't remember the actual size. Another beech I found in was a neighbor's carving. Back in 1947 he shot a bear and carved that information on a nearby tree. As far as I know, that tree still stands. It is a bit south of Shingleton.
Good idea! Backwoods Savage unfortunately it won't last too long. I carved it in one of ash trunks that I had the tree service leave for me to cut down. Kind of a pity actually.
