Crazy thread. Just found out my boss might be getting me a 661 for Christmas. Do you guys think it will have all the updates on it? He said they had to order it and it would be here next week. I'm pretty sure he is getting this saw, since I just recently told him I would love to have one despite all of the issues it has had. Thanks for any info!

Op, hope your saw is finally fixed. Defenitly no bueno to pay good money and then experience something like that.

If he is ordering a new saw then most likely you will be getting a saw with all the updates. Nice boss to give you such a gift!

As of Turkeyday I still don't have my 661 back from the shop.

A couple of things when you get your new saw:

    1. Action pictures and/or vids.:ithappened:
    2. Performance report.:sherlock:

I sure hope you get it straight this time. I'm hoping it does have all the updates.

My boss does things like that from time to time. He knows that it would be hard for me to justify the expense at this time in my life. Not a guarantee thats what it is, but if so I will definitly post up some pics/video. Plan on milling a little oak with it too. Wife wants a bed made from the oak on the property. This saw should get it done. :)

Yes it will have all the updates. The newest coil is a 4701A. Mine had an older coil and I was having lots of problems with it. And finally after a year of problems I went back to the dealer and said I wanted all updated electronics on it! Dropped it off on a Friday and they called Monday to pick it up. After I got home I pulled the recoil cover off to see that it did indeed have the updated coul in it and it did. I've been running it hard and no issues so far what so ever .
But if I do start to develop problem I have a WJ-69 carb waiting on the shelf to eliminate those problems!

Got the 661 back yesterday, too late to try it out. Turns out the Stihl regional guy picked up the saw from the local dealer and took it to their shop in Cincinnati, where it was repaired and returned to the local dealer.

It's had a fuel mixing solenoid replaced the coil replaced intake manifold and boot replaced carburetor replaced and then, to top it all off, they replaced the carburetor a second time. Turns out there's some type of selenoid built in the replacement carburetor that was bad causing some of the problems.

I cut several large ash rounds this morning and it started, ran and cut like a 661 should. It hot started everytime with 1 pull.

If you are thinkng about a 661, don't let my experience deter you. Keep in mind this was an early production 661 and the problems in the early production models have been taken care of in the newer production models.

I'm glad to hear that.I am sorry that your incompetent dealer caused you so much frustraion, lost time and money (taking saw back and forth). I still can't beleive stihl didn't just give you a new one once the rep got involved just to end the ordeal? And still am floored they didn't comp you anything. But I am glad they took care of you finially.

I hate to call you Ralph if thats not your name but I do believe with what has been done your 661 will be a solid tool.

661s are still silly but ported ones are just stupid.:)

Good deal. Hopefully it continues to run without issues. You plan on doing any milling with it? Sorry if you already posted that.

Still waiting on my saw to come in (if that's what my boss got me). You guys have any idea how long it takes a dealer to get in a new saw on the east coast? I assume this is a German made saw and not one made at the Virginia Beach facility. I think he ordered it last Tuesday.

It's probably just a function of when he actually placed the order (Wed afternoon) and the fact it was Thanksgiving that week. Trying not to get my hopes up in case it isn't a saw. :)

Unless for some really strange reason the warehouse closest to you is out of 661's but syI'll if it had to come from the next one I'd think it would be here already? At worst it would of shipped Monday. How do you know he doesn't have it at his house...this is a gift right?

I think he told me on Friday it wasn't here yet. We'll see what happens next week. If it isn't a saw, I always have my 395xp project saw I can work on over the Christmas holiday. Lol!

Glad it is running. Dad purchased a new Stihl back in the '70s. It developed a similar problem to yours. He gave the saw to me. I took it to several Stihl dealers and not fixed. Took it to an independent repair place and after 2 trips it worked. The 1st fix I refused to pay for. It lasted about 2 years, with minimal use, until the problem returned. Left a pretty sour taste in my crawl for Stihl.
Fast forward 20 years. I finally went back to Stihl and purchased a MS250. Only because of the deal they were offering. During price negotiations, I related the story to the dealer. He told me, "If had a similar problem, they would get the factory rep involved." Purchased the saw fully figuring that I would have to hold his feet to the fire.
Been 2 years and am well satisfied with the saw. I did run it at Walt's a litle. Fingers crossed that it stays running.
You shouldn't of had this many problems before they got the factory reps involved. I don't know if I would have as much patience as you.
Kind of sounds like Stihl still has a way to go on customer satisfaction.
Hope it keeps running for you.
