Is this white oak? Smooth bark splits easy, tight growth rings. Tried to burn some last year hi king it was hard maple. Not even sure where I got it. One the few batch of splits I cannot place where I got from. Wouldn't burn last year so saved it with the red oak for this year. Most burned good until today I put a big split in and that thing was spitting water out of the end. 2+ years CSS and not dry, wow.
Pics are awfully fuzzy and grainy, but I don't think it's either oak or maple. The former would have distinct rays in the end grain and across some of the split faces, which I don't see., and the rings are too distinct for it to be maple.
The bark on Sugar can be very similar to White but the White bark will usually be very light gray in color. If you see them standing, the light bark stands out hence "White" Oak. Judging from the second set of pics (first pic,) I see a little of that wavy grain along the bottom of the split so my guess is hard Maple. Goooood stuff!
Split a piece of that wet stuff. The fresh split should have a distinctive odor to it. Oak gas a strong odor. Maple is much more subtle.
I agree with Dave white oak is a pita to split in my opinion. Last year I took a tree down like that and it is still wet this year. My suspicion us some kind of maple but I don't know which maple.
Originally I thought maple and I think that's what it may be. Maybe sugar maple Ive heard that takes a while to season too.
Every white oak I have split has been stringy (and I have split a lot of it) The second set of picture definitely doesn't look like whit oak to me. Looks a lot more like Maple
That first set of pictures I would have guessed hickory especially the bottom picture but that second set looks more like sugar maple. It's odd though for sugar to not be dry unless it just wasn't getting enough air.
