I've burnt a cord or so of horse Chestnut in the past couple of years. It burns quickly, didn't make much heat, and splits crapily, I'll take it as SS wood, but probably only if it's already bucked to 16-18"
But there is a big difference between horse chestnut and an actual chestnut. What Is the Difference Between a Horse Chestnut & a Chestnut Tree?
My arborist buddy down the road said its chestnut oak. He also just gave me two big loads of dead red oak.
I've never seen chestnut oak with those kind of hooked points on the leaves... Tree Identification | The American Chestnut Foundation If you want a positive ID, check out this link. Ok so you are definitely right, i showed that pic to my bud in the sunlight and didnt point out the pointed edges. He could barely see the pic with the sun. Chestnut oak leaves are rounded and American chestnut is pointed. I got more pics too.
I sure did not mean for that to sound like it came out in type... I'm sure you know the difference. I did not mean to offend anyone... Have a great Independence Day weekend! Tree ID is tough just looking at pics, especially when looking at them on a washed out phone. I try to look at them with a large screen on a PC... Neat that you have a real chestnut there. I know of one at an arboretum where they work every year to keep it alive. But I've only seen one in the wild. Have a great holiday weekend!
Those do look like chestnut. You should send some leaves off to the ACF for analysis. Especially since it appears sprouts are coming off an old stump.
It’s American Chestnut. The stump sprouts radiate outward from where the original tree grew.. I have a ton of it in my backyard... Forest is very different than it used to be here...
