Enjoy it. December is often stressful for so many reasons so enjoy this peaceful moment in your life.
Could not agree more. Occasionally during storms, after my wife & son are asleep, I turn out all the lights and sit with only the light being from the fire, listening to the snow hitting the windows & the wind and just enjoy the peace. The storm is outside, but it's warm and fine in here. Reminds you of simpler times when if you could keep a roof over your families heads, a fire in the hearth, food on the table and know you were capable of keeping them safe, you had all a man needed. Almost makes you pity the fools who can't even keep their own houses warm every time the electrical tether gets cut.
I believe that feeling is what being off-grid probably feels like, without the constant, necessary hard physical work. Along with several long-time friends, I look forward to a couple of camping trips, into the white mtns, every year. Nice cabin, no running water, no electricity. A short walk out the back door to do your business. Wood stove with wood for your stay there. No cell signal. We are lucky to be able to share it with others. It is a tremendous feeling to be at total peace....... even if it's for at short period of time.
But of course! Haha. I’m surprised as we have always had to have a Verizon signal extender plugged in at the house. Service is so poor in this area. Without the extender we can’t make phone calls on our cell phones and getting online, forget about that without WiFi. I’ve noticed service and signal getting better lately and this is the first time I’ve seen 3G on our phones here.
We got another 6” overnight, so about a foot total so far and it’s still snowing, supposedly until about noon to 1 o’clock. It’s been sleeting off and on and we had thunder for awhile and they’re calling it heart attack snow. Makes me appreciate the Kubota even more. Winter is back in Maine temporarily. Supposed to be above freezing the next few days so any ice should disappear pretty soon thankfully. Stay safe out there this New Year’s Eve!
Rain just stopped here. 37 outside. Layer of wet sleet everywhere. Hopefully, gravity will suck it all away.

All we got. It's very hard to shovel. I just did the steps so I could feed the critters. I'll do more after it warms up a bit.
Ended up with 3/4” of ice. Maybe a little more. Branches up in the pines are still popping and crashing every now and again. That seems to be the extent of the tree damage - no full trees down. Just the pines. At least here by the house. Not venturing out back on the hill until tomorrow maybe. Hoping no crazy tree damage back there. I’m sure there is something. Maple lines took a hit out in the front lot. Not too hard to fix though. Power was out and back on six times overnight. Had a massive Eversource truck in the driveway at midnight working on the last stretch of lines along the driveway before the lines that come to the house. He said they fix one problem then a branch falls and hits the wires somewhere else nearby and it starts all over again.

Went for a drive down our road and then down by the lake. Think we definitely lucked out. If the wind was any stronger or the changeover from freezing rain to sleet/snow didn’t happen, I think this would have been a different story. Mostly just pine branches and debris down along the roads. One house had a huge white birch fall on it. Doesn’t look too bad. Couple smaller ash trees came down. This big, gnarly pine came down across the road. I might take a truckload for the maple arch. Feel bad for my neighboring maple producer though. He lost a handful of maple tops in his beautiful roadside sugar bush. Old trees, too. Couple smaller diameter maples snapped right in half. This one by the road is leaning now. Maybe a gust of wind caught his hill just right... who knows. Still some wires down over by the lake.
