The season is wrapping up fast here with all this warm weather we've been having. Trout season unfortunately closes this Saturday. I'm going to go for crappie and panfish Saturday morning, which will most likely be my last time out on the ice this year. It's going to be in the high 50s during the day before the temperatures plummet and I'm sure everything will be a sloppy mess out there.

My buddy and I got out Sunday afternoon to fish and pull the houses. It was a great season with good ice and not too much snow to get around in. Panfish is still open down here, as well as gamefish along the Canadian border lakes until 4/15. Not sure I will get in on any of that this ice season.

Few families gathered on the ice yesterday for some fresh air and fun. Temps above freezing felt almost tropical!

A relative went ice fishing for smelt, Lake Superior last evening, I’m waiting for a report. I’ve done the netting, in recent years the ice fishing for smelt has become very popular. I’m looking to learn intel, then setup myself.

In the utube videos it’s lighting to attract plankton, smelt come to feed, 40-60’ of water. It seems like it would take a while to catch 30+, but if the bite is good, could happen fast.

Yes, the relative went with guys well versed to catching smelt through the ice.

Interesting, all the smelting in these parts is one on tidal waters.

Are the smelt for bait or to eat? Not familiar with them.
