I would use Backwoods Off for ticks, for the last month I never used either. I felt some digging going on in my upper leg about 3:15 pm, I had a Brown Dog Tick digging in so I pulled it out. Once I made my way to the doctor he told me what kind of tic it was, he recommended hot water on a wash cloth held against the area where the tic bite is located then some Hydrogen Peroxide on it. Figured you had a few frosts by now & ticks were done until Spring. Normal for them to be out this late?
Even after a frost and it warms up. Good thing it was not a deer tick. Keep an eye on it despite, and you or the wife look for the well defined "target" just in case. Yes, spray, spray, spray.
I think the doc mentioned some days around zero will take care of the problem. The doc said I've been lucky, they've seen a 70 percent jump in tick bites this summer in this area.
The last several years they've pretty much been out all year long, Dave. I had them literally ALL OVER ME last deer season....luckily, I had permethrin on my clothing and none of them made it to the flesh..... We need around a month or so of sub freezing weather to really impact them.....those bastages are unbelievably bad anymore.....there are areas here that are literally INFESTED with them....
Anytime we get bit by a tick, we do the same exact thing. We put some vodka in a ziplock, insert tick, and he'll be preserved indefinitely.
Pulled a deer tick off my side about 2 weeks ago.. Couldn't believe I didn't feel him.. Got out of the shower and there he was. In there less then a day , so far no rash, I out purifiaction oil on the spot from Young Living essential oils, suppose to kill ticks and keep the wound clean.. I also took some pills I made up of oregano oil, it's suppose to be very anti virus - bacteria, just as an extra measure for a few days. ... Yup they are still out here... I stopped getting firewood because of the ticks and hunting deer here.. once deer season ends I'll be back out getting wood and it should be cold enough to kill off the ticks. Here in Schoharie, NY it was 61 degrees today , November 18th, unreal... and yes the ticks are still out.. Hate them bastards..
I was on vacation 2 summers ago in Land Between The Lakes Kentucky. Slept in only my boxers one night and woke up with a tick you know where. Yep. That was fun to remove. Didn't get too comfortable on me before I had it off but it wasn't easy. Had to use tweezers.
I got a huge larger than football cellulitis on my side. My MD was away, and the covering MD an idiot. Went to the Emergency room. Was seen by a doc who gave me an antibiotic and sent me on my way. A week went buy. I was in so much pain I could hardly breath. Went back to the Emergency room. They ran a tider. Came back positive for Lyme's disease. Took Rx specific for that. 14 days passed. Still positive for Lyme's. Another 14 days on Rx. Meds raising hell with me by then. Two years later. Bad arthritis. Lab test still show inflammation continues. (Arthritis) In my case, I think in came in the house on one of the dogs. If treatment is RECOGNIZED early, and treatment started, Lyme's can be avoided.
I've found 2 or 3 on the floor, deader than a doornail in the summer. The dogs get treated and I'll bet they came in on one of them but didn't make any farther. I use a permethrin/water mix on the clothes which seems to do the trick, mostly. Got it at the feed store in Amish country for 8 bucks and it makes several gallons. They didn't seem really bad this year, but I am ever vigilant about the little bastages.

I am also glad. Went out and gathered wood tonight. Had to move a wheelbarrow that was in some brush. No fear of snakes under there when it's 36 degrees out.
Ah...It was buried in a sensitive area. The only way to get the thing off was with the tweezers. They bury themselves in your flesh and there's no other way. I'm not holding a lighter that close to the family pride.
I'm sure your family is very proud. The only tick I've ever seen was in LBL riding in turkey bay orv. Good thing it wasn't on me. Been lucky I guess.
