While mowing the lawn last week I saw a walking stick. No camera with me. First one I have seen around here.
My boss saw one last week and showed the pictures around to all her friends. Surprisingly, some people had never seen or heard of walking sticks.
You can see his tail in the pic, I have no idea what it is. I was leaning on a tree an for some reason look stait up an there this thing was Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Of COURSE those grasshoppers were looking mean at you...some privacy, please! Wow, I have never seen/noticed that kind of wasp before. Do you think they might be good for controlling the EAB??
It's funny that you posted about this particular bug. Me and Scotty Overkill were just getting ready to cut down a dead Hickory tree and we saw 4 of that same type of wasp! One big one and three smaller ones. I assumed that the smaller one's were that males because they kept fighting over the big one. Well we had to break up there love fest so we could drop the tree. I am sure they weren't too happy.
I saw a giant Ichneumon Wasp last year close to an old rotting stump so figured I had good bugs taking care of business
Seen two of these guys crawling down the driveway the other day...don't recall seeing them before...any ideas?
Dug out some old snaps. Nothing spectacular, just some bugs that held still long enough to take a picture.
That's a pigeon tremex. That is what the ichneumon (aka sewing needle, aka stump stinger) is laying her eggs into. Pigeon tremex larvae eat a specific fungus, that's why you found her on a dying maple. The ichneumon smells the fungus and lands on the wood, then it listens and hears where the larva is. Then it drills in, hitting its target through 2"-5" of wood.
That's pretty interesting. I looked em up... It explains why they are in all the dead beech.... but will they keep living in the stacks? I'm guessing they need wet wood to live?
