You are a better man or have a tougher hide than I do! I am horribly allergic to any of the poison vines. Had it so bad once that I had to get steroid shots AM and anti histamine shots PM. The urushiol can also get in the smoke. Nope, not me. I won't mess with wood if there is even a hint of Poison Oak or ivy!

That's what I figured, I was just wondering where he was referring to, my wife and I both have family in Maine and we have camped and hiked over most of the great state. Never made it to Caribou, yet.

Had to run an errand today and found this waiting for me on the edge of the woods under the power lines. No poison ivy at this place. As I was loading it up, DSCN2016.JPG the town cop drove by and waved and gave me the thumbs up. Mostly Oak, some Red Maple , a piece of pine or two.

Deal, I love to do that. We use to spend time in Eustis, near Jackman. The B-52's used to fly low hugging the mountains right over our heads. SO COOL!!!

Eustis is by Rangely, as the crow flies not far from Jackman but unless you really know the woods roads it about a 2 hour drive.
My uncle was Air force and flew the 52s out of Loring. When I was young they had a family day there and we got to go into the planes. Security was just waiting for someone to look sideways. Last time I was there we drove down the big runway basically chopping grass.

Yeah we used drive the woods roads, I have topo's and Delormes Atlas. We sought out the deep woods and hidden spots. In my opinion in northern/western Maine, A two hour ride is nearby. :thumbs:

I’ve spent a ton of time in the north maine woods for both work and pleasure including doing the Allagash trip a few times. Last time I set up a family trip 6 days with 8 of us from 14 to 55 and we had a great time. But man, that was almost 20 years ago now. Used to do a lot of ice fishing west of the Allagash as well as on the waterway.
We lived in both Ashland and Portage Lake over a period of almost ten years then moved to Presque Isle if you’re familiar with the area. We’ve been in southern Maine for just shy of 25 years now though and I miss the county. Couldn’t get my wife back there on a bet though. She can’t stand the cold. I can’t stand the heat. Go figure

That's mighty powerful cold up where you used to live. Different from what most people know as "cold". A lot of folks just wouldn't understand.

You’re right about that. I saw the thermometer dip below -50 twice when we lived on Portage Lake. That’s real cold and I hope most people never have to experience it. You think -30 is bad? At -50 everything gets hard as rock and some things are pretty brittle. There were a few engines lost despite being plugged in. We used to leave all the woods equipment and trucks running in that weather.
I’m sure we have some members from Alaska who know all about that subject.

Geeze. That sounds just about like northern MI! Especially the UP.

So I’ve heard although I’ve never been there. Love to someday though. A friend a lot of years back, when I lived in Portage, came from MI and his family had a camp in the UP and he said winters were similar. I think a little further west they get more snow though.

Most of the UP gets a goodly amount. The most is in the western part and for sure along the Lake Superior shoreline. It is not uncommon to hear of a 300" winter in a few spots but certainly not all places would get that much. I remember when I was working and drove around a lot one winter, especially in South Range, just south of Houghton, you could not see any house in the village; the snow was too deep! That was interesting if you were trying to find someone and was trying to use the address. Best to stop at a business and ask directions. Don't count houses, count driveways. People would clear their driveways and go into the house through the garage.

Although I've never been to Maine, I've heard and from what I've read and seen, it does sound as if Maine and Northern MI are very close to the same except that MI has more snow. Mostly that is because of Lakes Superior and Michigan.
