That's an impressive drop in usage...would be hard to keep up with 20+ cords a year! Almost impossible to get 3 years ahead!
From 22 cord/year to ~4cord per year, that is a huge difference. Sounds like it took some years to get there, but I'm sure you are glad to be there now. Co-worker goes through ~15 cord/ year and pretty much spends all his time doing it, just prior to burning season. He just got a new furnace this year, we'll see if that helps. I've mentioned that his wood should be dryer, but as quick as he's going through it, I don't think he can get far enough ahead.
If he got a new furnace he will be very disappointed with it burning wet wood...the new fireboxes don't do well with it at all.
That'd be a great sig line quote. May I? It applies to so many things in this world, it's staggering. And it's getting worse at a staggering rate.
Well, he will learn at his own pace. I've told him about this site numerous times, and have extolled the advantages of dry wood, but meh Horse, water, n all that.
Well Backwoods, you're living proof that an old dog can learn new tricks. Now you can take a few years off from cutting wood and use up that substandard dry wood you have stacked up. In just a few years you'll be back to the good old green wood.
He's above that. Nuff said. Worst part, he's an intelligent man, but ya can't convince him he's wrong in any aspect.
Yes them guys can burn green wood but talk to them in late February and ask how's it going . Reality is hard to face . They will burn twice as much as 20% wood if not 3 times as much softwood . And they will be getting less heat also . Sent from my LGL84VL using Tapatalk
That's what I was thinking! When we went from 6-7 cord per year down to 3 I thought that was fantastic but compared to what Allan did, all I can say is wow!
For sure! I know you've met plenty of those type of folks. Now I'll be waiting to see that in your signature line!
I do that a lot, and not just re: firewood. Probably makes me a mean person, but jeesh...........how some folks survive is just beyond my comprehension. I pretty much do the nod and smile thing nowadays. I think my blood pressure thanks me.
I bought my first OWB in 93. I've said it before, and I'll more than likely bore the heck out of those of you who stick around long enough and say it again.....BUT.... The dealer I bought the OWB from made it clear that Yes, green/wet/unseasoned wood will burn in it but why would you want to? Just because it is outside of your house does not excuse good burning practices. But, on the same hand..... I can not tell you just how many people are scrambling each fall to get their wood supply for the upcoming winter. Only thing is they are burning that very same wet/green/unseasoned wood inside of their house! (Given the two, it is obvious which is the safer choice.) Backwoods Savage , the same OWB guy that jerked your chain would have the very same beliefs if he had an indoor wood stove. Nothing wrong with OWBs. Through the last three decades, I have had both indoor and OWB wood stoves....and at the same time. If I had to ask the others benefiting from the heat, they would all choose the OWB over the indoor wood stove.
Ok, wasn't gonna comment here, but gotta fess up. Last year was my first with the OWB, wood was split too small so I used more than I think I would've otherwise. It was all dry 2-3 years. First 1/2 of the winter was mild & I burned Silver Maple till around Christmas. Got cold & switched to the good stuff, but still small splits. We went cutting one cold azz January day & I came home with a load of dead Ash & a green Elm. I thought oh why not & dumped the load right at the boiler. The Ash burned decent, but didn't make near the heat, tried the Elm & wow! Anybody that says a boiler will burn green wood is full of it. Mine at least will kind of smolder it, but the water temp took forever to come up to 180 & the thing smoked something horrible. Not an experiment I want to repeat, I just had to try it once. I've heard/seen the same things from people, cut in October & start burning. No thanks. I think papadave 's got it right, just nod & smile.
