So this is going down tomorrow? Do you have an accomplice with all that equipment that needs to be run?

someone has to say it: too little explosive is probably as dangerous as too much. A little extra might send the pieces flying farther or it might blast it into smaller bits and small bits of wood aren't going to fly that far. I really have no idea which. But too little and you end up with a tree half blown up, still hung up- then what's the plan? I'd be drilling and filling to make damm sure that tree is transected. I'm not talking about total dumbassery like 50 pounds, and I'd have some kind of reasonable cover just in case the "smaller bits" theory is completely wrong.

And it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to rig the hackberry also. That way if the oak is hung up, you can "safely" drop the hackberry from a distance.

Another thought: rig it a little way up if you "safely" can. That will give it a better chance of falling out of the hackberry. If you blast it too low, it is going to end up just as hung as if you cut it.

The plan is to rig the smaller hackberry. It’s only about 8’ in diameter and already bent from the weight of the oak. I’ll take closer pics of the setup before detonation. Whoooood!

Good point. I haven’t decided how far up to rig, but can’t go too far in case we miss the target. That would not be good either :)
