I was fortunate to swing by HF right after that coupon came out, they had one splitter in stock. I bought it, then ran home for my trailer, since I live close the manager let me.
The sales people told me people had been calling about the splitter non-stop.
I did buy the two year warranty for another $180, this is HF after all. So far I'm close to seven cords through the splitter with no issues.

Are you saying you used one of those coupons at Harbor freight for a gas splitter?

Here is the latest addition to the splitter. We figured a log lift wasn't cost effect for us so we went with the ladder style from some earlier posts. Should really help with those bigger rounds. A 200# and 230# guy each walked up it and it didn't bother the ladder. image.jpeg Still going to add some more flat stock in the openings but this is just the start of the addition. Good rain day project.

All the material was scrap laying around the shop.

Me and my dad did some splitting today. The splitter ran out of gas after 2 hours exactly. It holds .9 gallons. We got a little over a trailer load split and I jumped up every once in a while and stacked it while we were splitting. The trailer holds 1.33 cords. You can see in the pic I had a little extra stacked up in the back plus there area few splits that are not on the trailer and a few uglies were split that are not on the trailer. We averaged about 3/4 of a cord an hour, which is not bad since I also stacked the load in that time too. I think the splitter has 19.1 hours on it so it is coming up on its first oil change (at 20 hours).

Here is my latest home made addition to the splitter. I'm not done with the wings, I may even change them but it works pretty good as is. The splitter also hit 20 hours today and got its first oil change.

    Nice job with the mods.
My buddy bought one of those splitters with a mailed coupon for $650, he's happy with it. With two people it is fast, I don't think he would need a four way wedge. try mounting a HF welding ground magnet on it to hold your new sappies.
If you come up with a mod to keep debris and bark from falling into the center track- let us know. [IMG]

I wouldn't worry about trash in the center, it clears out each pass.
Added grease fittings to the beam, kind of forms a wood paste, pump a few strokes in each fitting every so often before taking it out splitting.

Yes, it is a slip on 4 way wedge. I have some videos of it I need to put together. The 4 way wedge has created 2 problems. Problem #1 is keeping wood to the splitter and problem #2 is getting the splits away from the splitter. I am amazed at how much faster it is with the 4 way. I also get more uniform splits with it. Right now the 4 way has 2 hours on it. Tomorrow I will get a pic of the pile.

Thanks, about the mods. It really does take 2 people to run this style splitter efficiently. The ground magnet is a good idea. I was thinking about using a speaker magnet to hold a hatchet but it probably would not be strong enough. I do need a sappie holder too. I looked at HF's website and I did not see that ground magnet on there, they did have a smaller one. I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about the debris falling in the center. I think it would take a fairly major redesign of the splitter. The best way I have found to clean it out is to unbolt the cylinder. That allows the cylinder to move beyond its normal range of motion the debris can easily be cleaned out. You just have to watch that a hose does not get put on a bind.

The HF splitter is a different design than yours. Yours is like a splitfire. Yours hase the box tube that helps protect the opening in the center of the beam. With the HF splitter the center is always open and debris packs in the cylinder guide and where the cylinder bolts to the beam.

Here is the video. We were not trying to split fast. We were just seeing how the splitter handled the wedge and how the wedge worked.
