I put 4 hours on the splitter today. I did not have any problems with the filter. I'm not sure why you would be having problems with the filter, I am not a hydraulics guru. Is the vent open on the tank? Did the filter that burst look like it was restricted? The Wix base I got was under $20 and the filter was around $6. Let me know what you find out. How much was your splitter? It is on sale for $699 now.

Iam not sure on the vent for the tank wasn't aware of one.The filter base had a check valve in it and that may have created the pressure to burst the seems on filter but not sure.
I got it for 699 no shipping drove south for a 4 hour round trip.I was surprised when engine started on very first pull good runnin little engine.

The dipstick has a hole in it for the tank vent. The check valve may have caused the first filter to fail but I wonder what happened to the second one.

That is good you got it for $699 and did not have to pay to have it shipped. I am impressed with how good the engine runs on the splitter.

Does your filter base have a bypass/relief valve in it? The flow direction is usually marked on the filter base. And sorry but I gotta ask, you installed the filter in the return line going to the tank and not the supply line to the valve? (The orginal hose should go straight from the valve to the tank.)

That is what I just happened to think of. I wonder if the base is hooked up backwards.

If you have large enough hose, it is usually best practice to installed the filter between the tank and the pump. You want clean oil going to the pump then onto the valve body and cylinder. Otherwise you can get debris that cause three body wear in the pump, valve body and cylinder. Right now, you are catching the crap after it has done damage.

A partially clogged filter will destroy a pump without letting a single particle through. I would never install a fine filter on the inlet of a pump (strainer/screen is a different story...) without a pressure differential indicator and even then it's pretty sketchy as the filter itself could be restrictive enough to cause cavitation.

If the filter is located on the only return line to the tank, it should catch any of the crud before it has a chance to circulate again. Still protects the most critical component, the pump, unless you're dumping in dirt from an unfiltered tank vent or the like. ;).

Everything was installed and flowing back to the tank just like 94BULLITT did in his video.I removed bypass relief valve that was in the base and still had problems.I hooked it back up without filter and it works fine. The Brave model 2 way does not have a filter probaly for a reason.

I'll have to qualify my earlier statement that it depends on the pump you are running and the size of your filter. If you are running a 50-75 gpm industrial filter with 2-2 1/2" ports and pumping with a gear pump, you are probably pretty safe.

If you are running a consumer filter with 3/4-1" ports and a variable displacement piston or vane pump, not a good idea.

If the base has a bypass it should have bypassed before the filter burst. Double check how the base is on the splitter. It should be marked in and out. Is this the base and filter you used? http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/lenz-hydraulic-filter-with-housing-assembly

My splitter hit 10 hours last weekend. Other than the tongue that broke I have not had any problems. It has not leaked a drop of oil or burned any oil.

I built my log splitter last year. I bought a predator motor for it. It has allowed me 2 split at least 15 truck loads of wood. No leaks and no problems. They are basically a Honda clone.
