We always had a firplace growing up then my parents built a dream home here in Nh and we moved up from Long island. My dad git a woodstove and burned ti supplement oil. He didnt clean his chimney for three years because he always had “hot fires” before the 3rd year ended needless to say the fire dept was there. After that he climbed up there every year and as a young guy starting out looking fir a home i learned a good lesson
Famous line from the guys at our hunting cabin "But we've always done it that way". Cut green red oak in March, split it into overnighter pieces to big to fit in the stove, stack it tight in the wood shed with no sun or ventilation. And then complain that Grandma Fischer cant keep the cabin warm unless the draft is wide open. OK, I'm done ranting. Take a Premium and calm down.
My boss just told this story this morning...over the weekend some friends of theirs that built a new house a couple years back got to meet their local firemen personally. The fire chief determined that it was due to an improperly built chimney, rather than creosote this time
Nope...red green oak, or green red oak....same thing. We sell that SPECIAL stuff here as "Christmas Wood" right before the holiday, ending Christmas Day. By the same token I wonder what would happen if I marketed wood best used for the first fire of the day (not to be used at any other time). No idea what Id call it, but I bet it would sell! Sca
I got into a semi-heated discussion with a younger coworker a year or so back. He has a wood burning fireplace insert and burns green wood so he doesn’t have to load it as often, because that’s what grandpa said to do. Not saying I haven’t burned less than optimal wood in the past before I learned. I know darn well my dad did, probably why we had a chimney fire when I was about 8 years old. He about filled his pants when I mentioned that I burn pine. Apparently burning pine that was split a year or more ago is much worse than burning oak that had leaves on it a few months earlier.
Was about to buy a full cord from a guy on FB Marketplace last fall. He was supposed to deliver on a certain day but messaged me that he'll be a few days late because his splitter needed a hydraulic line fixed. I told him no thank you. He's either too dumb or too honest, either way I'm glad I didn't buy that firewood.
