You all know Dolmar/ makita should really be thanking us. We are the best marketing department they have ever had!
I won't add to your frustration.
But if I could afford it would pick one right up even though I have the 6100. Man those 6400 series are great felling and bucking saws.
    Ok I may have lied:D
Why don't you have one yet clemsonfor ?

Limited budget, one income family with a little boy who loves thomas the train and I have been buying him Thomas toys. That brings far more joy to see him open things than me getting another saw to do what, cut firewood after all :)

OK, new set of issues...not sure what to think now.

I called another store that is farther away, they had 2 Makitas listed today. As I was talking to the tech in the rental dept.
I asked how the carbs are doing on both saws, he said they were having issues with the saws staying running. Same issues
as the first store I was dealing with. And speaking of the first store, the manager would not work with me on either saw, his priority list
on getting other tools repaired and rented and put the chainsaws on the back burner, so I quit on them.

So, I'm taking a trip over to the other HD and take a look-see in a few minutes. They dropped the price to $299, advertised. I think I may get that down even further
    with a crappy carb.
I've never worked on a chainsaw before, this part of things is all new to me. If the piston checks out and all the other inspection items look ok
I'm probably gonna seriously consider it on the spot.

New concern is the cost of a carb and someone to do the work.

I have a 20 min ride, I'll check for posts before I walk in. Hopefully someone is on and reading this.

Carb kit : $10, learning how to fix a carb yourself : priceless

I'd worry about the piston only and then use the (possible) carb issues to haggle it down. Plenty of youtube vids to learn how to install a kit and clean it up, and if all else fails take a trip my way, down in the NB/ Fall River area.

It didn't look too bad, It also didn't run.
I had them pull the plug and that looked ok. They wouldn't pull the muffler because they would have had to disassemble most of the front of the saw. He did give me a 90 day warranty on all saw parts and labor and the best part was he stocks all the makita parts at the shop. He is replacing the carb in the morning, new plug, air filter and bar n chain. We got the price down to $255.
I asked the night manager what the 6421 goes for new, he said the store buys them for $525 and they mark them up from there.

Zama C3 DM11D carb new is only $55 so i wouldnt worry to much about a carb issue, if rebuilding with a $10 kit fails its still relatively cheap to replace the carb with new.

Take the whole front of the saw off to remove the muffler???:headbang: That is BS plain and simple. Remove the bar and remove the case bolt through the bucking spike. Next remove all screws holding muffler on. Easy 5 minute job!

Congrats on the new saw and great job getting the warranty!

Don't worry about carb. Take a trip to see nice or we can talk you through it or just buy a new one and put it on. Then we can talk you through the tune.

Or you could send one of us the carb and we could build it for you but at that point with the price of shipping and The kit and the fact you would have already taken it off there would be no point. Just as cheap to buy new and put it on. Sometimes the carb rebuild doesn't work and then your back to square one.

I'll have it tomorrow around 4ish.

I gotta remember to get that warranty in writing. The web site says "as-is" on rental equip sales, can't imagine them keeping that up too long.

Done, I have it home with me. Gonna go through it some more, maybe take the muffler off for a better peek.

No release papers to sign, the receipt acts as my 90 day warranty and they put a new carb on this morn.

At work today I watched a few vids of some mods on this saw. For around $200 this could be a 79cc saw.

Yep for $200 you have an 80cc saw.

If it runs strong I wouldn't worry with the muffler , unless you want to do it to familiarize yourself with it or like baseline pics or condition. But since they gave you a warrenty maybe it's not a bad thing as it sounds they may take care of you if you find it scratched......which I would put money on it not being.
