My buddy that I borrow his splitter has 100% ATF in his. The label on the tank actually calls for it. Just a plain old splitter. 20 years old or more.

Several folks on the tractor forum I'm on run their power shift yanmars on ATF. There common sump tractors to the trans and hydraulics use the same fluid. No issues from those with it in.

You can use straight atf - the plain jane stuff (if you can find it) don't recommend the 3 or 4. ( staright atf plus a few modifiers, likely what the plow companies sell as fluid at even more inflated prices) We have used whatever atf we had around or could get in a pinch ( you know blow a hose at 1am and other fun escapades) We always clear the system after though. Most systems go down because of water in the system forming ice and freezing generally at the filter screens- very common on the older Western , Fisher, Monarc ( yellow units) pumps ( both the really old cable ones and the slightly newer version with electric over hydro). The newer units now being used are less prone to that particular problem as the systems are sealed so much better now and the larger plastic bottle reservoirs allow for better breathing not being directly exposed to the elements.
