Sorry Jason. Should have followed this thread more closely. Paul B up off of Rt 114 Mechanicsburg has tons of fitting and hoses. At least for future reference.

The return should be below the oil level to prevent aeration.
Also return on opposite side of the tank from the line that goes to the pump.

Not sure what stage you are at , just saw this thread.

After you said that, I saw what you saw in my pic and thought great.. then I read the package and thought for sure it was wrong. So I had to scratch the itch before starting a return. It does look 1"/1". Packaging makes it seem like the hose barb is 3/4”. :hair:

Thanks, I'll remember that for the future.
Should I just use Teflon tape on threads for these fittings?

The feed port is very bottom dead center and the return is off to the side. No easy way to modify that. Here's an internet pic to show as I'm at work.

I'd tape them just to be on the safe side. Some fittings require it and some don't.

Best you can do without draining and adding another port.
Not an easy thing to do and then you have the risk of debris from cutting and welding in the system. That's not a good thing.

You could...probably not required in this case though...just don't get sloppy with it where strands of it could get into the oil, might not be catastrophic on a simple system like a log splitter, but on things like engines and transmissions (or more complicated hydraulic circuits) lil strands of tape can get into places that it shouldn't be and cause major issues!
I used high pressure hydraulic type "pipe dope" on mine...but for what you are doing there, you are not trying to seal up any real pressure, so...

I always tape pipe joints. Hydraulic fittings are self sealing on the face.

I use the yellow or blue tape. The white stuff is too thin and likes to leak because it tears when the joint is assembled. Stay back one thread from the end and give 3 solid wraps. Shouldn't have any trouble.

I have tried pipe dope, but it makes a mess when you take it apart and gets on everything. Tape is easy enough to remove, just make sure you clean out your threads when taking it apart again so you don't get any where it shouldn't be.

    Got a bit done today.

Filter relocated, feed hose hooked up, tank partially filled and oil changed. That old return hose was a sunuvabitch. Hoping to get it further after I get it warm.

Well, one step closer. The 3/4” hose on a 1” fitting ain’t gonna fly so I just ordered new elbow. I cut off an inch and used a heat gun to try a second time because I wanted split something. No dice. I did cycle the ram several times to fill the filter and get the air out. Seems fine. BBBD4428-AE1B-4073-9399-F40CF7530EA1.jpeg

Yeah getting a 3/4" hose over a 1" barbed is going be a fight likely lost...surprised you got it that far!
Was that a fitting you already had?
You should be able to source those parts locally fairly easily...3/4 close or short nipple, 3/4 elbow, and 3/4 x 3/4 barbed fitting...just throwing it out there...

Yes, the 1” 90 was on the filter housing to feed the pump which used 1” hose. Complete oversight till I had the return hose in my hand ready to connect it. I gave it my best try twice lol. No biggie.
