We always had issues with cut ears, not belly scratches. Of course the German Shorthair seemed to always be 3 feet off the ground when I could see her! Try to have something to address a bad cut with you. We left the field early once due to a bad ear split. Superglue might be a good backup.
Ok, the skid plate from gundog supply came in today. Its a durable carhart material and the stitching as well as the buckles are beefy! Thanks for the advice guys!
Try this: Bag Balm Original Moisturizing Ointment | Dog Wound & Foot Care Safe for pets. I don't know you can find anything any better.
Ive seen that product somewhere recently. Looks good! No there isnt, but she wont be too far from me in the fields. She doesnt leave my sight for more than a minute tops and wears a bell.
The best chest/belly protection for you hunting pooch is made by these guys.................Mendota Skid Plate - Orange. $36.95 (Save $3.04) I've gone thru a couple, but it's taken more than several dogs!!
Season opener this Saturday. Took Monday off to get the fields to myself. We've been out for dove and grouse so far and she did well. She been doing good training in the woods with scents and blind retrieves. Once she hopefully locks onto a bird in the field, it flushes, I shoot it, she retrieves it, a treat will come her way.
Look into the full length light weight bay vests for hog dogs. You do not need catch vests they are heavy. I can get you some numbers if you need some. Let me know if you need some light weight one built I am working on building some catch dog vests.
I did end up picking up the mendota skid plate, which is really nice. But it will only last this season, and I expect her to be double in size by next year aft this time, so I'll need something again before then.
We can get something together for you next year to try out. What breed of dog? And what size will she be?
These are super heavy but we could lighten the up and take the plates out and no cut collar. To give you an idea these vests are 9 years old with year around use. Still work great! And not one pass through but then again you are not catching hogs!
Hey, sorry for my delay here, the thread snuck away on me. She is a chesapeak bay retriever. Her top weight will be 75 lbs, but I am unsure off she will get that large. Her growing has slowed down
