I'm the opposite. Got the stihl down & can't keep up with the Oregon. To many letters I guess.

The Stihl dealers near me often run a buy one loop get a 1/2 off loop in the spring and fall. Might be worth keeping your eye out for.

Thought I'd just come back with an update in case anyone has a dream of a 240 race saw lol. All the mental gymnastics aside, a muffler mod, richening up the carb, and a switch to a 91VXL chain (or the PS3 chain mentioned) is probably as good as it's going to get for these little saws.

The 91VXL is definitely more aggressive than the original safety chain.

Shorter bar with same tooth drum still would help. Less chain and mass to drag around the bar.

From a "sharp" chain on a grinder by a hack to one of these guys who really can file and one who can square file you can probably get 10% or more alone!

You should have got one of these when they were a hundred and fifteen bucks, I did, now they are $132.99 still a a good price for a saw that will work for you
    on a budget.

Princess Auto has sales on the reman versions of this saw from time to time, but I always seem to look at the flyer a week late. I think the Husky 440 or 445? was just on sale here, but apparently calipers and a battery for the truck are a higher priority.:(

I'm good on wood for a bit yet, almost 2 cord in the shed, better than 2 1/2 cord on pallets, so I have lots of time to decide!

The real secret is insulation, then more insulation covered by another layer of insulation. Then you shovel snow up against the basement walls. Finally you let the sleigh dogs sleep in the house. :D

Yea inulation is something I have almost none of. R19 in ceiling in most of house. Stove room has insulation in the walls.

A night in the teens is pretty taxing on the stove

I think I burn not quite 3 cords from October to end of April. Just a small mobile home, and I never totally get away from the oil furnace either with the stupid placement of the water lines.

Rather than rely on a 240, m'self I'd look at a factory refurb 435 (40 cc) or PP5020 on VMInnovations-dot-com for a saw. Given what I'm hearing about the small white poplar, the 435 would likely be my choice. Get a Husqy carb tool asap, if you don't have one already.

Whatever the saw, I wouldn't focus totally on what chain(s) to buy, but more on KEEPING the one on the bar SHARP. What that means to me: at minimum each second fillup, I pop on a Granberg filing guide and give each cutter a stroke or two. It's really precise, and one goes with me most everywhere I go with a saw. A sharp chain helps so many ways, including fuel endurance, so often I just pack a liter of mix for a 40 cc strato RedMax.

When a chain acts dull (easy to detect), file it NOW or swap it out for yer spare. I'd much prefer a sharp chipper chain than questionable full chisel.
