You could add the switch right at the furnace rather than upgrading a thermostat and wiring.

If the board doesn't have a switch to turn the fan on, and you don't want to run wires for a new t-stat without trying it first, a jumper wire on the boards t-stat terminals would make it run...it would be what, the R and the G terminals yooperdave ?

yooperdave not just some gain. I’ve heated my home like this for 10 years, and very rarely had to run oil. But I get it that my situation may be rare. Heck, it’s worth a try considering how much it’ll cost to attempt it. No?

    Everyone's mileage may vary.

Try it, if possible, and make your own decision.

I have a raised ranch, both the basement and first floor is all living space. Pellet stove in the lower level as was the furnace. I ran the furnace fan only for a long time. I burned it out and had to have it replaced. It worked for me because the furnace was in a heated space. I gave up on that and then just used ceiling and floor fans. I had a floor fan at the bottom of the stairs blowing toward the stove. So that pulled the cold air down the stairs and pushed it toward the stove where it would be heated and raise up replacing the cold air. If you have a way to use outside air for your stove's combustion, you will do a lot to prevent drafts from outside air being sucked in through cracks to provide air being used up for combustion in your stove. This stops your stove from using room air for combustion. Why use your heated air for combustion and cause drafts.

Moly Mackerel! I did not mean to start a feud with this thread. I do appreciate all of the replys though. Bottom line seems to be that this fan idea might work in some cases and is of no value in others. Too many variables in every situation to draw a conclusion either way although more comments are on the negative direction. If I go ahead and try it anyway, I will bring the thread back to life later on just for conversation.

    Yeah, sometimes threads go south.

Fwiw, I run my HVAC blower to redistribute the heat from my fireplace insert. It works for me in my 1600 sq ft ranch home. My furnace isn't new though, probably from the late 90's and I have a fan only setting on my upgraded programmable t stat. I'm actually looking at going to a smart t stat, one that I can have it automatically cycle the fan.

Our furnace fan is usually run when my wife wants some air to be moving. When it gets stuffy in the house but not needing heat or A/C is when the fan comes on.
