Lost cap to end of fuel spout on plastic gas can. I have bought after market spouts before but I don't want to for this plastic container cuz those after market spouts aren't cheap! At least the one I bought was not. Other than that, in the past, I have lucked up and found a piece of plastic that just happened to stick in the end of the spout and serve as a snug plug but I'm striking out on this one. Any ideas on what one could use to either plug the end or fit over the end so dirt and stuff doesn't get in?
cut a slice in a empty shotgun shell slide it over your cut a slice in a empty shotgun shell about half the length of the plastic part ,slide it over the spout, keep the slit at the bottom ,slide it down until snug, tension will hold it in place .
Dad's been using a 2 stroke mix bottle for the last 30 years. . And no, I never fill up out of his can.
Go thru your recycle bin and look for (plastic) bottles with screw off tops, like soda/water bottles, etc. Unscrew the cap and see if the bottle neck sizes up. If it does, screw the cap back on the bottle and hack saw or (carefully) box cutter the end of the bottle off. Usually there's some bottle that the neck fits fairly tight on the end of your spout.
If the other suggestions fail our local ace hardware sells all those rubber corks like we had in school. Maybe yours does too.
ive shaved a dowel or piece of wood to a slight taper(cedar works good) to slide into opening...a homemade cork of sorts. My current gas can was nibbled on by a mouse/critter and got holes in the neck. Duct tape to the rescue. The holes werent that big. Gas softens the tape up slowly. If it comes undone, i retape it. Im too cheap to buy another.
Squirrels eat just about anything plastic at my place but they have not eaten my fuel cans, knock on wood. The squirrels sure are expensive. My neighbor lady, about 90 years old, trapped 18 and hauled them off to the woods and quit trapping, cuz it didn't make any difference.
That's hilarious! And my can/spout looks just about like that except my spout broke in the ribbed section.
Neighbor uses rubber/plastic chair leg tips...says they fit and work well...can buy a 4 pack for $2-5 too...
The first time I lost the cap to the spout was the last time I put a cap on the spout. All I've ever done for 30 yrs or more is cut a piece of vinyl siding and use it as a cover.
I have the exact same fix on one of my cans. I accidentally sideswiped the neck with a running chain....oops.
