My Folks always had fire places so we would lay up smaller amounts of firewood with bow saws and axes. When we came to WA St. I was 17 and I got this idea of making extra money selling firewood. Started with a rental saw, a Jonesred I believe, then was given a broken McCulloch saw that I repaired. Put myself through 2 years of junior college with that saw. At 26 my new wife and I bought a wooded lot and we (side by side we worked) cleared it with a new Stihl 028 and 20"bar. We layed away about a dozen cords of firewood before I built us a modest house with a Schrader woodstove. We have had saws and heated through the winters with wood ever since!
I also can’t remember. I know I wasn’t a youngin and I know it wasn’t a lot. Dad didn’t like loading and unloading so he kept a tight grip on that saw He certainly didn’t mind me running the buzzsaw. Wasn’t till I was 48 and dad passed away I got the full job
I'm thinking I had to be 12 or 13. I may have made a cut or two earlier but not sure. Went to work in the woods at age 15 and then quit school (made up for that later) at age 16. Worked both in logging and mill. At age 17 I became head sawyer in a mill. Many, many times over the years I cursed myself for quitting that but there were reasons. I always missed it though. I did do some tree work in people's yards but much preferred to work in the woods.
I was 14. My dad had Craftsman (Roper) saw that he taught me to use. I still have the saw, it needs a coil to run it still has good compression. Picture is from the Internet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Older, maybe 35. Rented one to drop a dead shagbark at my old house. The tree came down fine. No animals, or humans, were injured in the felling! But that was just dumb, blind luck! I had no clue what I was doing or how dangerous and stupid it was to do it at the time. But it did put me on the correct path to hoarderdom! That was 32 years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.
I was in my late 20's. Bought a Husky 40 when we bought out house. Still runs just fine. Never used one prior to then.
13 I think, possibly 14 yrs old, with gramp's Stihl 015 that I have, and need to get running. I could use the light top handle for limbing white pines that I've been doing, along with the ash trees that are in my yard that have bill I ons of branches. A 14.9 lb saw isn't ideal for limbing.
Man, as crazy as it sounds, I can't say exactly...I know the first time I actually owned a chain saw was 2008...and it is a very fertile saw too...it just keeps multiplying...
Meh...its getting old and about "out of gas" now...got to worry more about the other "young bucks" hanging around the shop now...
15 or 16 Dad borrowed and old McCulloch from his brother. What a beast. I don't know what the model was but was big heavy with a manual oiler. By the time to lugged the beast to the woods you had to sit and rest. Pull the heck out of it and if it started you hoped you had enough energy left to some sawing. When I was around 19 I came home one day and dad was real excited. He drug out a new little Stihl he bought. Boy what a charm to run.
37, last year after I joined the forum. Well I suppose I used the neighbor’s electric a tad, before that, but no younger than 36. Yup, thirty year old chainsaw virgin.
