There is an 80 acre grove of black walnut that I drive by when I go to Monroe WI. I just marvel every time I go by. 100 percent black walnut not a woods really because that’s the only thing growing. Basically a black walnut tree factory. About half are veneer and all of them are at least 24” DBH. An heir of the Depplers Cheese factory family owns it.

I had a black walnut blow down on my timber property in January. It will be ready to sell in October with about 15% moisture I am guessing. Walnut doesn't have the BTUs of many other hard woods, but it is AD73CB04-A2B7-413D-AEEB-95D6D9B3E362_1_201_a.jpeg BDB09DB6-B470-45F5-B430-84EFCE412DE2_1_201_a.jpeg very scarce as a firewood. Have about 1/2 cord of good trunk wood I'll try to put a premium price on. My dad has all the limb wood and uglies for his stove.

I wouldn’t say you’re nuts at all for a $50 offer. I’d follow up and ask him if he’s had time to think about it. Either of those two logs appear to have great potential on a mill.
Guy close to me selling slabs for $50-$200ea.

I personally like Walnut, especially without the bark. I give my boss some in the fall when I have it for his outdoor firepit. He like the aroma of it... It does have a decent aroma... Good Luck... :handshake:

Most I'd offer is to broker having it milled and then splitting any profit 60/40 after expenses on sold slabs. 40 for him. Maybe 70/30. 70for taking the risk of having nothing. First slab or two can belong to the miller. If that's even enough.
He wants someone else to take the risk and expense of opening them and finding garbage ? No way.

If he hasn't called back by now he's probably hoping word of mouth will provide a miracle sale.

I'd expect what he thinks they are worth as they sit is humorous.

Called the guy today and offered $40 for the small log. He said no and judging by his reply we werent even close so i didnt even ask that. He did ask for me to give him a number when i called.

Oh well, i gave it a shot but had no expectations. Ill run into another BW score eventually.

Just as we suspected, he thinks he's got a fortune sitting out in the weeds feeding the bugs and fungi. I'll bet if you offered him 5 grand he still would've been offended:rofl:

He will give you a call in a couple of years when it is getting all punky & he can give you the $40 to get rid of it for him.

Most dont realize BW heartwood is very rot resistant. I wanted to build some outdoor furniture out of it had i got it.
