I am thinking at least $.40/split, and if that, the old gent would get 100 splits for $40. Convenience store packages are, what, $7 to $8 and you get, what, six to eight (very small) splits? So, $.40/split seems more than fair to me. And I don't have to deliver, that's him coming to get it. That's what I'm thinking right now, lol. Say it's 650 splits/cord; that's $.37/split if a cord sells for $240. But if you're buying much less than a cord, you don't get that deal. (I sell a half cord for $160, delivered/stacked. Sold two half cords just yesterday.) If ya base per split price on a half cord price of $160, it computes to be $.50/split if it's 325 splits per half cord. So, $.40 to $.50 per split. And a bonus of not having to deliver and stack. I'll work with the man, I think this is just for funzy fires, he doesn't heat with it. He and his brother just like a fire now and then.
That sounds fair to me. How do you calculate your half cords when you deliver them Yawner ? Is it from a measured stack or do you neatly stack it in the PU or???
Neatly stacked into my 5x8 trailer, a heaping over the top but not to where it would fall off going down the road PLUS full to the bed of my short bed pickup, that's a half cord. I am continually amazed at how, often, when people are talking about doing this and that and it was five or six cords... I'm thinking... are you talking FULL CORDS or face cords? Five or six cords of wood is one helluva lot of wood. Five cords would be ten trips of me hauling what I described... my Nissan Titan, full to the top of the bed of the truck and a top-rounded load, all neatly stacked, on my 5x8 trailer. I also own a 5x10 trailer. If i fill it 2 feet high, that's 100 cu ft, not a cord. I am curious if I can stack it high enough on that trailer such that it won't fall off... and be one cord. If I could stack it 2.56 ft high, that would be one cord on that trailer (5 x 10 x 2.56 = 128 cu ft). EDIT: Nah, I don't think I can. It's only 14 inches from top of wooden floor to top of side rails. I don't think there is any way I could mound it up above the rails twice that high such that it wouldn't fall on the road. I put a bid in on a 14-ft trailer this week but didn't win it! Dang!
I am as well. I back all mine up with pics for the most part and consider myself a good guesstimator of wood volume whether it be trees, logs, rounds, or split mounds, stacks etc.
Counting the number of pieces in a cord is something I've never even thought about doing. I'll stick with cu. ft.
I split most of my best BTU wood like Oak and Locust kind of big. About 6” across. I’ve counted and come up with about 640 pieces in a cord
Ended up doing this twice today. First time I delivered a half cord to two guys that were buddies of each other and lived just over a mile from each other. 680 pieces to the cord for 340 at each house. Second time was two full cords delivered to two different houses on the same street. They each got 660 pieces. Saved me quite a bit of time and gas.
Well that leaves me out...not near enough fingers n toes to deliver cords...guess I'll hafta stick to gas station bundles
Would it be worth adding some 3’ high plywood sides? Can the trailer handle the weight of a full cord? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My dad delivered a 1/2 cord to a guy like you Brad. He got a call from the guy later in the day saying he was short on his 1/2 cord.(Dad was always generous on his loads.) He took some more wood to the guy and when he got there the guy had it stacked so tight you couldn't have put a swizzle stick in it.
Im OCD about stacking When i was a little kid i would unstack my dads work and redo it. I used to yell at him when he would stack the wood too. He had a friend visiting one day and they commented on who stacked the wood as it was so neatly done. My mother used to do 1000 and 1500pc jigsaw puzzles on the dining room table. I used to be able to do those at a young age. My sister (ten years older) and i would fight over who got to do the solid color part of the puzzle (usually the blue sky). Its a good thing then for any of my wood customers!
That’s how I am about the dishwasher. I almost always feel the need it reload a partially loaded dishwasher in order to do it “right”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
For campfire folks I made a rack, it's 2' x 3' and holds about 250#s, sells for $25. Comes down to about fifty cents a piece.
