How important is octane and which 2 cycle oil should I use in my Stihl blower

Octane number doesn’t matter if it’s fresh. I’m a firm believer that fresh pump 87 (the stuff everyone uses in their car) is better than 93 premium that’s been sitting in the ground for 8 months because no one uses it.

And run rec fuel if possible. No E.
Ethanol has oxygen in it. Rec fuel doesn’t. Gas likes to make power at 14.6 parts oxygen to 1 part gas. If you add some oxygen to the gas (like in ethanol), now your saw is running lean if it was tuned for rec gas

I run nothing but 90 non ethanol in my OPE. 90 octane is the only stuff I can get without ethanol in it, unless I get AVGAS which is 101 octane IIRC.

As for mix oil, I use either Amsoil Sabre or Dominator mixed at 38:1 in ALL of my 2 cycle engines, even my very old saws. I buy it by the gallon (have 4 gallons on hand currently) and break it down into 2.5 gallon portions.

So for now I am running 87 octane e-zero in my Honda Outboards and Honda generator and DHT log splitter. True fuel in my Stihl chainsaws and Echo weed eater and 87 octane e-zero mixed with Red Armor for the Stihl blower. I wonder if the sooting problem with Ultra has something to do with it being completely bio-degradable?

Get a new fuel can...2 gallon unit. Write on the side "Blower Only". Mix her up a batch. If she don't use it all, dump the leftovers into your truck. That's what happens to 'older' mixed fuel that I have. Just had to dump almost a gallon in after not using it in the weedeater this year.

Mtronic and Auto tune helping a lot of folks out with this. I can only recall a couple times needing to twist screws when flopping back & forth between canned & pump fuel. Ear tuned and not as well as could be, I'm sure. They mostly run & start well for me though. I do use 93 oct though, I should say. Supposed to take 9 months before the chains start to break down vs 3 months for 87.

She does indeed have her own blower gas container. I have many times put older mix or outboard gas in the truck.

This is the way if you aren't burning it off fast enough for the cost to matter. Heck, I'm guilty of picking up a ≈1 gallon can of 40:1 Tru-Fuel at the local big-box every 6-12 months.

When the complaint shifts to the cost of the engineered fuel - time to switch back to pump gas.

Nailed it. The lady on YouTube, Chicanic, has a little vendetta going against Tru-Fuel noting that it is in a bunch of machines that end up in her shop with a "no start" complaint and that it runs differently than pump gas. I'm not sure where her tune is with the pump gas, but I'm pretty confident that a little adjustment would have had her blowers running just fine.

All depends on the fuel system materials. With the right diaphragms in the carbs, bigger jets, and FKM (Viton) fuel lines, I'm pretty sure I could run Everclear and not tear up the engine. The 10% blend in common automotive fuel will not kill 'em either if the engine is in frequent use. It's when they SIT for long periods with fuel in them or have inappropriate materials in the fuel system that Ethanol blends become problematic.

I watched her vids on it. I agree, retune an get running. But, she believes, or at least has been preaching, that you don't need to retune when switching fuels / oil. Which is often bullshirt.

This is why the blowers and mowers get pump gas. I use to much fuel in them. The 2 cycles get 90 e-free year around and the mowers get corn squeezins from first spring mow till fall. Then I switch to e-free in September.

I run 93 octane if I can't find ethanol free
I run my ope oil mix on the fat side usually between 40-30 to 1. Not brand loyal on oil but always try to find synthetic.
Exhaust screen always get removed as soon as equiptment comes home with me

Gotta get down here to the land of motorized toys, often with V8's (not just in pickups) and year-round, salt-free roads. Plenty of premium sold here!

Oh boy I wish I had gone that route. Back in late 90's I had two offers to head south for Nascar teams workning with their engine programs , with my son just being born and ties to the area I reluctantly said no.
Boy if I could do it all over again there might be a different decision.

I was fortunate to get the offer of a lifetime, and only one strong connection to NY, and they followed us down anyways....

Good for , glad you made the right decision , and the one that followed you down ; " all the more power to them" , another good decision.

I did manage to land myself here with a great job and benefits ; however with the automotive genetics in my blood I often wish I had done different. At this point in life it looks like I am stuck here.

Nah I’m plenty happy right where I am where 93 gets stale in the tank. Too much riff raff
