Having seen astronomical sums squandered, I prefer to omit whatever possible. Kind of like taking a drug addict's money to interrupt procurement. You could always get a swiper for your phone. Read that there is now 1 trillion in CC debt in this Nation. Another first! lol
My initial thought on accepting checks was I know where the firewood is stored and I have no problem retrieving it. Also, it is rare that I deliver to any customers that have a home valued at less than 1 million. I use to take a peak at Zillow before a delivery if I was not familiar with the area, but not so much anymore since I know Nashville very well now. I will take a check from anyone however. I have found wood burners are a better class of people in general. Maybe they know how to enjoy life?
Honestly, I'm not a fan and think he's a dirtbag. Good fabricator, sure. Did you ever hear the story of him stealing that rare Porsche? He was into his 40's, old enough to know exactly what he was doing. Nothing worse than a thief. Sorry, off-topic rant over.
That tattoo is the only thing I've ever been a 'fan' of concerning him. My mind wanders wondering exactly what situation/s led to it's incarnation. I guess he later switched from bikes to guns. I like both, but can't be bothered to care about his.
that is NUTS!! I get nasty-grams at my prices. I could only imagine the hate-mail I'd be getting around here at your prices. I'm the most expensive around our area.
Just like real estate.. Location.. Location.. Location. I'll get a tri-axle delivered for around $800-$850.. been a couple years now.. and it'll generally net about 7 full cord. 2 yrs of heat at that price, plus my time and effort. People in the cities aren't gonna go that route, and they obviously make enough $$ that it wouldn't be worth their time or effort. So they pay the man. Everyone has a certain price point, that if exceeded, they'll do it themselves, or do without.. Some just have a higher price point than others. Living on the lower edge of the financial food chain.. I find it more beneficial to do what I can on my own. If money was no object.. I'd gladly let somebody do it for me.
I frequently visit firewood company websites in the surrounding Nashville area to see what they are charging. The largest, Nashville Firewood, charges $185-220 a rick/facecord picked up. If delivered, they charge an additional 30% + $75. So ash is $315 and hickory $361 delivered. Each mile over 30 is $2 and they ask for an additional fee if the storage place is more than 30' away. It is rare that any of my Nashville customers own a truck and if they do, nothing goes into the bed except groceries. There are a lot of sellers on Craigslist and Facebook market place that sell firewood ridiculously cheap, but they are usually 1-3 face cord people who have cut up a diseased tree in their front yard. Usually a lot of unspilt rounds and limbs. I don't see them as competitors.
I had an elderly lady call me about three years ago to tell me what a bad person I was for charging $70 a face cord delivered. Not a single $1 tip from anyone locally and rarely a "thank you" for prompt delivery and stacking. Entirely different people in Nashville. They all typically pay others to take care of their yards and everything else you could imagine. Makes sense. Pay someone $20 an hour when you are making $150 in your line of work. So they appreciate great customer service and quality firewood.
That’s insane prices ! Glad you can get that and kudos. I by and large stopped selling other than long time customers and family/friends ( free usually) because people were complaining about 75 per rick delivered and stacked. Keep in mind , would never sell anything that wasn’t at least two years CSS and average 22” long. I would say average here is $125 for a fc or rick, wood may ne 16-18” and very seldom seasoned. One guy does 70 but picked up and always Ash so probably ok wood.
Is that just one way mileage or round trip? For example: 50 miles one way will the extra fee be $100 or $200?
The local firewood companies appear to charge $2 a mile for the one-way distance. When a customer outside of my free delivery range contacts me, I calculate what my additional diesel amounts to and add $10 a hour for driving. So a lot less than $2 a mile. The past year I have made a lot of deliveries to Murfreesboro, TN which is about 100 miles from my location. I usually just ask for an extra $20 and nothing extra if they purchase 2 face cords or more. And since Murfreesboro is about 30 miles south of Nashville, I also don't charge extra if already making another delivery in the Nashville area. I have found most people don't like being hit with extra fees, so my price includes delivery, wheelbarrowing, stairs/steps, stacking and a 1 CUFT bundle of kindling, and if available, a large box of wood chips. I enjoy all aspects of firewood except the driving part.
I’m with you on the cash. It’s what I prefer, and most people are fine with it, especially if they have a day or so heads up.
Venmo takes a cut, so I won’t use it and they report their transactions. Nope Most folks I sell to know it’s a cash business. Some will ask how I want payment. I have one check customer.
I have had two Venmo payments out of almost four hundred payments that I missed out on $3 to $4 due to fees. I'll have to research as to why but don't worry about it. Of those two, both gave generous tips.
I frequently check FB market place and CL to see what others are selling their firewood for. Came across this advertisement and noticed it was the same storage bin that I have been filling since May. Weird how both of us used the storage bin in our ads. The owner of the restaurant contacted me and said he needed a reliable supplier with quality wood. There are tons of sellers in the Nashville area asking $75-125 a face cord. Nobody has quality and a large quantity for those prices. I don't concern myself about the cheap firewood competition in my area.
