How far have you torn into a hydraulic cylinder?

    Nice work.
Having the equipment and knowledge to do that kind of work is priceless. Also kind of satisfying as well.
I also enjoy doing work like that , even better is when you do something and someone asks " Where did you buy that ?" , when you can reply with : "I didn't buy it , I made it ". That makes it even better.

One step up is when I do it at my day job; their machines , on their time , their material and electricity. Now that's a winner.
However I don't get paid overtime and do go well beyond my call of duty so this is like an overtime bonus I guess.

Possible that it's a dedicated sanding/polishing lathe. We make a buttload of stainless steel rollers and I bought a lathe just for that.
My bread and butter machines get treated with loving care.
I didn't want to make it sound like you would physically break your lathe. But it doesn't take much to lift parts a wee bit and allow a little bit of what's under the wiper into the ways.

Uploaded this in response to another thread. Thought it should be included here as well.

You can still cut away from the chuck and use downforce. Run the lathe in reverse, but have the tool on the back side of the stock. Never use a half nut if you want real nice threads threading towards the chuck. Use a long travel dial indicator (I never had DRO’s on a lathe) and learn to ramp out fast on the cross slide approaching your zero.
