I understand and if any cats were injured in the cleaning of any pipes I make this offer:

….now that brings back some great memories.

Side note: fuses burned under water.

Getting back on track... I don't clean the chimney. My wife does it all! Easy too as we have 6" stainless that runs outside the wall. Just remove the bottom cap and stick the brush in; push it up and hook on another length of rod and push it up again. Only about a 10 minute job and even then she doesn't get much of anything but she feels better by cleaning it annually. With our stove and good wood, we could clean it maybe every 4 or 5 years or thereabouts.

I didn't clean my flue (the vertical run) for the first five years. Last year i brushed it and just got some loose dusty stuff.
I do clean the connector pipes, snout, tees and clean-out each year before the start of heating season. There usually is a little flaky black junk there.

I clean both chimneys one time every year whether they need it or not. They have never needed it because I clean them preventatively.

I have gotten a cap pretty dang clogged a few times after wearing out cats or with a noncat but before I realized that screen filters are a bad idea. The actual chimneys hardly have anything.

Oh and for the how question, I use a sooteater from the bottom up. Right through the loading door. Works great.

OK, so you have used cats to clean the chimney enough to wear one out? Is the noncat a dog? I am confused ...

I use sooteater top down. Short easily accessible chimney. The hardest part is dealing with the cast iron baffles on my Jotul insert. Balancing these so that I can make sure the secondary burn tubes are in correctly is a major PITA.

Last time I seen one of those...35 years ago...trash had just landed in the yard and the lid was still bouncing it’s way down through the limbs from a long trip to the sky. Lol!!!

Thanks to the sick humor of your members, I am leaving this forum. Nothing about these posts is good for FHC.

Lol. But they don't get that extra scratching action when you yank on the rope if you use the frozen ones.

I just use the fiberglass rod and the nylon brush once in the fall before burning season.

I'm not going to apologize to anyone. I only say things like this because it's funny. I hope you don't think any of us would hurt a cat. Now, you do have to realize that more of us are dog people.

I clean my chimney by pulling the deflector baffle & leaving the door open for a few minutes. Works great & doesn't require much effort. :emb: Ok, ok I know, it's an outdoor boiler in a metal carport & I wait for a nice snowy or damp day. Haven't had enough buildup for any fireworks yet though, wood's pretty dry.
