I believe its considered seasoned when the internal moisture content is below 20%. Dont quote me on this. I am not a lawyer, nor would i ever be one as im too honest.
Generally, around here. Seasoned means the wood was cut in the spring and sold in the fall. Then there are some that season their firewood in log form then split in the fall. Might even be some that sprinkle Mrs. dash on each load. My point is “seasoned” is ambiguous. If you are buying from 90% of cordwood sellers you are not going to get wood that is to the standard we all enjoy. Just saying.
Your standards up there are more or less the same here. The wood i sell was turned into a split then dried for at least nine months depending on the species. Oak and hickory get at least two full Summers.
Thank you sir. I try to educate folks along the way and get plenty of compliments on quality, dryness and correct volume. Im not the average hoarder either!
Good question out west we call it "dry" wood, too bad that confuses new burners like when wet heavy snow melts on seasoned wood, ya, not that kind of dry. BTW we go by how heavy a split is.
As I said, I'm no attorney but when the owner's manual says 20% or less, I would say that may be a starting point. All speculation however. I've had my share of experience as an expert witness in both civil and criminal cases, regarding bicycling crashes, to know how each side can make things go on forever. Or at least until one side or the other waves the white flag and settle out of court. No justice, only cash!
I'm sorry, I cannot tell you lbs wise, just how heavy the splits were loading into my arms were alot heavier than I'd known before, as well as I burn other wood than many here out east. And not worth the price of a potentially deadly chimney fire.
It's actually pretty easy. You keep throwing green splits on a raging fire. Then once a month you take a sack of rocks or chain and you scrub the crap out of the chimney so when you have a chimney fire it isn't a BIG chimney fire. People who learned how to burn green wood learned how to do it. Ii's not hard. To learn how to burn well seasoned wood you just unlearn how to burn green wood. And then learn all over again how to burn dry wood. If you learn to trust absolutes, you're fricked.
Then that fire is Smokey. Burn dry wood and friends at fire will say that hoarder has nicest outside fires though
Green wood is like drugs; Just say no! You are asking for trouble. For anyone forced to burn green wood think long and hard about getting on the three-year plan.
