Hey friends. Picked up some holly and a mystery wood. Craigslist guy said it was black locust. I thought oak maybe or honey locust, but I rarely see oak and never seen honey locust. What do you think?
NOT honey locust, unless its some type of hybird and it doesn't look stringy enough to be American elm. I have to say:
I dont think its HL. I have seen BL with darker heartwood like that. The bark somewhat resembles younger BL. The PNW it may be different than here though. Get some more pics for us Juniper Hill
Surprise nobody said walnut yet. Not sure about the bark, but the heart wood sure looks like walnut to me. But I’m not worth a crap at wood ID!
Ha ha. It was not fun to process. I cut the barbs off with my 460. Then I had to collect them off the ground. They were like nails. I was honestly worried about picking one up in a tire or my dog’s paw or something.
Yep, both black and butternut. Never had black but I got some butternut once. Water was literally pooling in my truck bed from the rounds as I loaded them. BTU on butternut is near the bottom.
The only time ive seen butternut was the one growing in the yard when i was a kid. Blew over in a storm in 1976 and dad cut it up for firewood. The stump kept sending sprouts up for many years and dad would keep cutting them down until it finally died. I remember the sticky nuts from it littering the yard. Thanks for mentioning that...fond memories.
That’s what I was thinking. Black walnut. But I have absolutely zero experience with that wood. And that’s only based on pictures I’ve seen because we don’t have that tree growing around here naturally. So that would be a complete stab in the dark.
