We used fatwood a lot over the last 7 years. They work good. But nothing lights as fast as our homemade starters.
Thomas says the "FHC" branded Supercedars are only through the swag shop. FHC20 is the code for the discount at Supercedars
I’ll give these all a good run then see what I can DIY. Rutlands barely got me going tonight. Not enough surface area.
Its hard to beat a Supercedar...maybe some oak kindlin soaked in kerosene or something, that's about the only thing I can think of that would light as easy, burn as long, and as clean...
Supercedars arrived yesterday. They’ve definitely set the bar. Planning to try a home version with wax and shredded paper sometime this season to see how they compare.
I made small batches of fire starters for Mom and a friend. I used egg cartons, really dry sawdust mixed with cross cut shredded paper and wax. campinspecter tried one out in the boiler and we were amazed at how long it burned for. It is not really ideal for the boiler because of the layout but campinspecter may try a few over the next couple of burns.
I've found if i put a 1/4" of wax in the paper cup first, it glues the bottom of the cake together and the paper is glued to the cake. I did get a bag of Dixie cups at a yard sale for free but i haven't tried them yet.
I don't conserve the wax much. I probably used half a crock pot of wax for my batch a couple weeks ago. I don't measure anything and the wax is (almost) free. I fill the paper cups about 1/2 way. No kindling needed. All my fires are started with full size splits
