When I first heard about retro foam and the similar products, I was all excited to hire them out. I ended up not going with them for a few reasons. When considering other insulations types/processes, I learned that the spray-in foam products will and do shrink in the wall cavities…..some as much as 11%! The other vendors had proof of this shrinkage on display. Another reason is that the application process needed a certain amount of room to insert the hoses into the stud cavities. The agent told me that it may not work and wouldn't try it. I ended up with a blown in cellulose product that needed the same amount of clearance in the studs but said he would be willing to try it as in both cases my clearances were right at the listed specs. It was a success and we're pleased with the product.
Airkrete is the only foam I found that can be put into existing wall cavity that has ZERO shrinkage. Fireproof, no chemical off-gassing, bugs and mice won't mess with it, slightly higher R value than standard foam..almost the perfect insulation...wish I had been smart enough to have went with it!
Yeah that may be the worst I've seen...mine is not that bad...but still, any gap is an air leak...not what I was going for! Oh well, just hafta scrounge a bit more farwood!
We have grandma's house with old plaster walls. About 10 years ago we had a crew come in and blew in the walls and attic, and I replaced all the windows. It was amazing the difference made. Compared electric use the summer before to the one after and the electric used for the ac unit was cut by over half. The house in shoulder seasons maintains noticeably better. I can't believe how much quieter it is inside. Don't remember what we paid but in 10 years I would guess we are closing in on it has paid for itself.
Greenstick did they do cellulose, fiberglass or foam ? I had a cellulose contractor come out Monday... still haven’t seen a quote from him....
Our old farm had zero insulation in the walls and single glaze windows, when we moved there in 1994. Lotta coal and wood to heat that ole battleship... When we finally got a loan, we re-sided the house 4 years later... we blew in cellulose from the outside and replaced all of the windows too. As you said Greenstick ... it was night and day... ...
From what I have read, dense pack in the walls works pretty well...and enough cellulose blown (properly) into the attic is fine too...only a small improvement to be made going spray foam vs cellulose...have to weigh the risk vs reward I guess.
I’m under the same impression..... its looking like I will do my own attic... cathedral ceilings throughout... may skip doing anything in the walls.... until I can find the proper machine. Guess everyone has enough work ...... Can’t get quotes back or return phone calls.
I've been noticing that trend for over 10 years now...I understand being busy, but if I have to chase you too much, I'm out.
