Hollow Logs

I cut a dead birch last fall and many rounds were hollow in the center. Sure, I could split stack and let it season. However..... would these make decent Swedish Candles?

I cut some black locust that’s hollow. My wife grabbed them up to plant flowers in.

 

Would you stuff them with something?

 

Only way to find out is to try one or two.

Swedish candles/torches, feed upon themselves. Your logs being hollow, have little to feed on.

I'd be curious to see if you can come up with some creativity.

 

Ive never tried making one from a hollow log. I usually will put them aside with the intention of making something out of it.
Some hollow hickory (lower left in pic) i havent split yet.

 

Save em for a campfire After you get a decent fire going set them on top and flames shoot out of them like a chimney. Kinda cool effect although it doesn’t last a long time. Kids will think it’s cool

 

Bottom center with 1 1/2” hole in it would make a decent one. The rest not so much. They’d work but not optimum.
May want to stuff the good one in the tightest fitting big one

 

I think they'd be more appropriate for rocket stove type of burning. Slide in a dry branch or three. The less space, the better.

 

Thanks guys! I'll give this a go once firepit season gets started. Based on the advice, I'll put some small dry pine kindling splits in there and see what happens. Maybe I'll mix in some hardwood to extend the burn time.

 

This idea! Yes! Planters or heck just a nice place to put a bunch of flowers for mom or wife. Pick a nice one out of your bunch and put a small mason jar with water at the bottom. Just warn anyone about the jar though. Normally any birch that gets any rot in it hardly ever does that or stays solid much past spalting. Here’s a round that came from a recent pick up. Seems actually pretty stable despite not being split for about a year....

 

Umm.. I could be wrong, but I think that's more square than round.

But, it would work just fine.

 

You’re right about that! I just normally see the center go out but this was the sides that were more compromised than the heart.

 

If you know a taxidermist, unusual crotches, hollow areas, they love them for staging the animals. Some buy them, I have been known to give them to my taxidermist friend.

 

I love the hollow ones. Get a good bed of coals and set one on and wait a bit.

 

In honor of my wife’s birthday, we lit this candle last night in the fire pit!

Four 3/4” drilled holes propped up on blocks. This worked!




Put a few dry pine branches in there to get it going.

Thought of this thread today Skier76 when i almost split this catalpa round. Big hollow center and a knot hole to boot. Ill let it dry and burn next Summer.
