Hoyt that's a beautiful stove.I've burned coal and as you know it burns very hot and very long.As is your clearance is in the danger zone. However according to Hitzer you can reduce that rear clearance by 66 % by putting a 24 guage heat shield with 1 inch airspace. So with that you can bring the rear clearance down from 24 inches to 8 inches.Problem solved. If not you could become toast.Coal is nothing to fool with.
Let's see if it's just me they don't like to hear about safety from or if it is just safety information in general that is the problem
It seems every thread is turning into nothing but calling out code violations. I/we have no problem with anyone pointing out these things, however, ONLY doing this and it's your way or the highway in every thread is creating problems. That's why creating a resource was suggested, you or anyone can link the resource, and let it be UNLESS a member has more questions. You should know better than anyone being staff elsewhere that when long standing members are getting pizzed by "policing" and are sending in reports or pm's regarding this , it needs to be addressed. That's where the idea came into play about the resources which looked like it's beginning to take shape.
Now, let me see if its just me or your trying to be the wood stove police and "JAM" things down peoples throats! First, Everyone here who owns a wood stove DOES NOT ALWAYS NEED YOUR HELP! Assist, sure, we have no issue with that! Add resources, we have no issues with that, being belligerent and telling peole they're wrong and your last comment calling "us" out on Safety, "I" won't stand for! You started with me on the pine issue and I backed off and left it alone. People here have been burning "LONG" before you were born and in the business! You maybe have been doing it with a family business, but you don't know everything!!! And, you sure as hell don't need to be the wood stove police or treat members with disrespect, let alone the Mods who are/were helping you. I myself have been burning longer than you've been alive!!! Many folks here were assisted by many other folks on here long before you came along! If you want to be an A$$ and command respect, so be it! You'll see just how long things go! If you want to help, "fine"... Relax
I have not shown any disrespect to anyone here who didn't disrespect me to start with. I have never called anyone an azz here or said an entire profession was clueless. But someone else has. In addition how is informing people about safety standards being the woodstove police? I have yet to tell anyone what they have to do. Just what code calls for and what is safe.
So, in this wording, "you can care less how he installs his stove" "BUT" you wanted to "BE CLEAR ANYONE ELSE" Reading this thread, is clear on clearance requirements, Are we all that stupid? Do you know how many threads on wood stove installation there are in these forums? Does any wood stove come with "INSTRUCTIONS"? Minimum requirements? In this wording you wrote, you want to make sure we all haven't fell off the turnip truck! If you don't care how he installes his stove, or anyone else for that matter, then suggest to them, look up the local codes! Don't rant about it.
See this was easy, all you have to do is post for folks to see! NASD - Wood Stove Installation and Operation
I have yet to insult anyone. Or rant about a thing. I simply pointed out that the install could be unsafe depending upon what was behind that wall. And gave suggestions to find out what was there.
I understand what you are saying completely and I respect your approach as well. I just don't see why it is a problem that threads are turning into a discussion about codes and safety. To me in forums that are about installation and use of woodstoves those discussions are a good thing. As an example look at the wall shielding thread . I simply gave my advice on the wall and advised on code. It was well received with no conflict at all untill a mod came in and demanded I gave information about my own install.
Now that is toned down a few notches I suggest do this; Start a thread with Information leading and directing to: Codes and sources, clearences and installation, and list applicable "state and local codes for those sources". It's actually easy. We all understand things here and "every situation is different"! As I said in the past, Assistance is awesome. And, if you reach out to the membership here, you'll see how gracious we are. I'm not in the business but there are "several" folks on here that are and some have been doing it 35 years or more. (A simple): Hey I know a about this, if you want suggestions just yell. Can go a long way!
To be fair that is exactly what I have done most times. Only to have people sometimes moderators give me a hard time about doing it.
