I had my stove pipe on my old stove starting to turn red.
I've had my alarm go off, a couple of times this year, no real problem just adjusted the air

I should being getting a temperature controller and thermoouple in the mail from auberins tomorrow. I have an insert and I don't the temperature readings from either the bimetallic thermometer or IR gun. At the least this stuff should get me a better reading. It has a relay, and I plan to cycle the high speed mode of the fan to keep temps down to some level. It gets high, I believe, with the air closed down all the way-high chimney, good wood, cold temps, with a new insert. I could add an alarm too, I guess. If this works, it'd shut down the high speed to low speed, which is a lot less noisy too.

My alarm just saved my butt again.
I got distracted, heard the alarm go off, ran into the stove room, pipe hit 1300 degrees :startled:
Shut the air down turned the blower on full blast, cooled down pretty quick, disaster averted.
     :rolleyes: :doh: :picard::headbang:

I usually keep a pretty good eye on the stove for the first hour.
I was checking out my new pasta pot, I got off the porch :)
Goes to show you how fast it can get hot, the alarm goes off at 900 so it went up that much from the time the alarm went off till I got in to it:hair:

That's the kind of thing that makes me "as nervous as a long tailed cat in a rocking chair factory".

Can't remember first time I heard that one, but I like it.
Seriously though, I may have to through this thread a bit, as I didn't know you had high temp alarms you can set up.
    Good to know though.

Glad you caught and controlled the issue quickly.. sounds like it could very easily end poorly.:bug:

Yeah go through the thread there's plenty of information.
With my old stove, I knew there was a problem when I would , smell that smell and I find the pipe starting to turn red :startled:

I think my thermocouple probe is going bad?...is this a thing?...do they have a life span?

The temp randomly starts jumping all over the place...wild swings. If I unplug it from the slave unit and then plug it back in it fixes it sometime only for a few minutes, sometimes for a day or two. I've cleaned the probe and the connection at the slave unit is solid. I even have a spare slave unit and it will do the same thing when I plug it into that.

Sounds like an intermittent short or broken connection.

Never had anything like that with mine.
First time I cleaned my pipe with it in there, forgot to take it out, bent it all up, I straightened it out and it seemed to work fine but, just in case I bought a new one and replaced it.
Never had any wild swings or anything.

Whistling tea kettle on a trivet on the stove.
My wife likes her tea and coffee, I use the whistle to know when the stove is up to temp. It would be shrieking in an overheat.
The trivet keeps it hot but not boiling at normal temps, I use it to let me know that it's time to turn everything down after lighting it, or a reload on coals

Have not posted in a while, so here is a little update:
Retired the Regency F1100, and purchased a new BK Ashford 20, really like it.
For the new BK I decided to make a new updated temp controller /alarm.
This one has three controllers, Flue, cat and stove top. The controllers all have alarms, and the stove top
controller also turns on the blower at 675*.
The flue alarm is stet to 875* and doesn't usually go off that much. It definitely will let you know if forget and leave the door open :emb:
The cat alarm is set to 365* the temp where the cat is active and you need to close the damper. (Also good if you become distracted and forget)
The stove top is set to 775* and has a TC bonded to the steel top under the cast iron jacket.
I really like having the monitor/ alarm, you can easily see what the stove is doing, and helps prevent over-firing.

I just got mine today, they say it need a 1/8 (3mm) hole but I checked my probe and it would need a 5/32 (4mm) hole

which size is your probe and which size is the hole that you made? :hair:
