It's hard to beat dry Oak, Red or White, and they are the predominant species here. I went in the woods behind my SILs' this afternoon and struck gold with down Mulberry and Dogwood that I could throw in the stove now. Dogwood is great stuff when it's dry, burns forever. They don't generally get too big, but I found one about 12" diameter. I found a Cherry that had all the sapwood gone but the heart is pretty rot-resistant stuff. Also a couple of White Ash. May be about 3 cords back there which will help me get ahead on the SILs and start feeding Oak into their rotation. I've considered planting some seeds from those "monkey brain" fruits. It grows pretty fast but probably not fast enough for me to benefit. I've read posts where guys pulled Hedge posts out of the ground that had been there over 50 years, and burned 'em.
