Border hoarders...er, ah, maybe its actually hoarder borders....hmm, no that doesn't sound right either... Either way, welcome PNY!
Welcome PatrickNY . I somehow missed this thread. That is a dandy woodshed! Great pictures. Look forward to many more post.
LOTF, I was at my brother’s new house today. He’s awaiting delivery of a new wood stove. I saw a new Fiskars ax at his house and I said, “Wo, is that an X27?” Turns out it was an X25, but still, 2 days ago, I wouldn’t have known either.
Hi Patrick; You are off to an amazing start ! The wood shed looks Really nice ! I do have 1 suggestion if I may. Next summer or when the shed gets empty. Add another 2x6 or 2x8 to your roof ledger on the opposite side of the posts. As a general rule, you want your support for rafters or floor joist to be slightly greater than the combined rafters. If you get a big dump of snow. And the trees nearby load up with snow. Then a warm up comes on fast and a bunch of snow plops down onto your roof. That throws an impact point load that can exceed the static strength of your roof system. An extra ledger board top and bottom will take the extra weight. Looks like you are having great success at hoarding nice hardwood !
I have the Fiskars 4 lb splitting ax with the long (36") handle. I was Amazed at how well it split when I got it . Now I just take it's preformance for granted, well I still really appreciate how well it works ! The MS 170 is actually an amazing little saw for the price. Once you get over about 8" diameter wood . It is above it's primary preformance . But they are Sooo handy to have . For general cutting I greatly prefer the 170 to my 193T top handle arborist saw. Something like a 362 Stihl would make a great , big brother to your 170.
Cold Trigger, Thanks. So, one of my brothers has 2 of these same wood racks as me. (that's where I got the plans). On one of his, he put a shingled roof and that one gets a lot of snow piled up on top, but on his other one, he used a metal roof (like mine), and he says that the snow slides right off the metal roof. So, that's what I'm hoping for too, but I see what you're saying. Thanks for your input.
Anybody know what kind of wood this red colored wood is? The lighter colored wood is Ash, I'm told. Thanks. ps: 2nd pic is the tree that the red wood came from...
Welcome and nice shed there - now go build two more. Re - frozen radiator pipes - have your heating guy put some antifreeze in there. Don’t ask me how I know about that trick.
Welcome to the club. Lots of great folks here sharing knowledge and humor. That is a great looking shed and great start on your wood hoard. Keep getting all the free wood you can. We have a MS180 that I use alot for the smaller logs, did a muffler mod and changed to 14" bar with .050 gauge, non safety chain, that little saw eats now. This is a 12-13" oak log... https://youtube.com/shorts/bOkTmWG1TpQ?feature=share
You're not guessing, you're learning. As you've already learned, seasoned means CSS'd and dried to around 20% moisture content. ( less for a cat stove or higher for an outdoor boiler or non-cat stove) Welcome to the club!
