I had my consult this morning. Turns out I have a double hernia, one on each side of the groin. Going to set a date for the surgery when they call me back tomorrow because the scheduler wasn't in when I was there.
Wow, good luck, hoping you heal up fast, but do everything they say. If you do it their way you'll be farther ahead.
Well, that's not the greatest news Dana, but I'm glad they found it while you were there. I would imagine they'd do both. As long as yours isn't too bad, you'll be doin' this in no time.
The surgeon is going to do both at the same time. The operation will be about 1.5 to two hours. I can go back to work in 4-5 days and do anything I normally would after two weeks. I'm having it done in Boston so the hardest part will be timing it so that I can get down there after the morning rush hour and leave for home before the 5 o'clock rush hour.
Take a driver. The 2 week estimate is pretty close but I still wouldn't push too much that soon. You'll feel it if you do. Do you have your date yet?
Definitely need a designated driver for that one, You'll be all doped up when they push you out the door in a wheelchair. If you have a long ride home say it hurts when you are in the recovery room and they will give you a dose of pain killers. They'll hold you for a little extra but it will make the ride home better. You will be fine in two weeks and there are no lasting side effects. The pain after surgery is more from the tools than the repairs.
They gave me a script for pain meds, which my wife filled at the hospital pharmacy. They got me through the first couple days, but I quit taking them. Pretty funny when I first met my Dr......he was fairly calm, and explained some things. Same thing in the hospital. When I went back for my followup, he was very animated........"I have never seen a tear that big. It was THIS big (imagine someone showing how big the fish was that got away). It was MASSIVE." @Dana B, do you have a date? I'm only asking, so I know when to start thinking how you're doing.
My 2 bits. Take a driver. It is nice to have someone with you but you will be in no shape to drive home. Believe me! Especially if you are contending with any kind of traffic. You won't be legal to drive anyway with the drugs in your system. Accept pampering afterwards and behave yourself - follow doctors orders.
They won't do the operation unless you have a driver. I'm fine with that. I've got nothing to prove and it just seems like common sense that I will be partially incapacitated for a little while after the surgery. I'm hoping I won't need pain meds other than over the counter Tylenol. I'm not one for taking meds unless it is absolutely necessary.
I only took the meds because the 1st couple days were a little rough. If they offer them, get 'em,....just in case. This coming from one who also doesn't like taking pills. They've saved my butt a couple times, though. You might find sleeping in a recliner to be easier than getting in and out of bed or a couch. Might be a piece of cake. YMMV Still thinking about this.....are you doing ok?
The doctor sold it as no big deal for most people because it's the least invasive of the hernia repair surgery options and all of the reviews on his website from patients that have had it done make it sound pretty mild as well. To be honest the thing that bugs/worries me the most is the whole "no sex for two weeks" thing that the doctor mentioned. I would have preferred it if he could have told me to refrain from something else for two weeks, like food, or breathing.
