Hey Sub… you're so right. This winter seems to be the more normal Maine winter to me. We really have been through some crazy hot water mid-winter rain crap over the last 10 years plus, haven't we? I get a kick out of all Maine TV stations breathlessly reporting the next impending doom storm, with frozen reporters out there complaining away while they wait for the first flake to drop… so they can breathlessly report… :fire:

You mentioned ticks. I asked our vet the other day about the "10 below will kill ticks" theory and she said something about it may kill some but the eggs/larvae will survive so… when things thaw out, they just keep coming. That ruined my day. I was hoping this year's cold would help. Maybe I should find another vet?

Unfortunately I found out your vet is right. Winter ticks are killing all the moose in NH and I've heard reports that the same is happening in Maine..

Looking back when we had those horrid old fashioned winter, do you recall ticks being a problem? I don't know if those winters with extreme cold kept the ticks down, or if they have just moved on in just like the turkeys. Anyway, I have no use for ticks. I tested positive for lymes disease. Very painful experience.

We have friends who have had life changing bad experiences with lyme. I know I freak out when I get a tick latched on. Sorry to hear you had a bad time with lyme too. Have you been able to knock it down with antibiotics? Thankfully, any ticks I've found have always been wood ticks. Got a lot of deer around here so… I always try to stay on top of em. Hoping the cold knocks the lil buggers down a few notches… :zip::mad::axe:

two rounds of the antibiotics to knock it down, but the doctor doesn't seem to want to test for it anymore. I still wonder if I would show positive or not.

So… if, at it's worst, you were a 9-10, what number of pain/discomfort would you say you're at now? (I sound like a freakin nurse…) and, I know there's not one thing funny about lyme.

Yeah you're right. It used to be common to see 20-30 moose on my commute to work every night (7 or 8 years ago).
Now, it's getting rare to see any at all. NH is in the process of studying why. I tend to lean towards ticks, but the lack of DOT funding for roadside mowing and salt reduction during winter road treatment also play a part in how many we're "seeing". Swamp Donkeys can be a pain when driving, but they generate a lot of income for my neck of the woods, as I'm sure they do for you folks.
Did I mention that I hate ticks!!! damm things make me itch just thinking about them.

, hope the Lyme is under control now.

Hay Stinny, It's ok to sound like a "freakin nurse". I wears a medic for 8 years, then with the GI bill, I went on to become a RN, and then retired from the Army. Two of my four kids went on to also go into the Army as RN s and so far, two of their kids will follow into the profession.
As to the pain, 4 to 8 depends on what activity I have had. I still I have a lot to do. I think I am gong to get this ck'ed out. That damm slip on the ice was so quick, but this is no hurry to go away.

Hope you find a way to be free of pain… :campfire:
