    To close this one out, the fresh cherry branch smell is very different from the rounds - at least the type of cherry in my yard.
    And the bark indeed matches a nearby catalpa.

    Given its low btu content, It's now in my emergency stack of quick drying wood for years when the winter outlasts my (bay of my) woodshed.

    When I saw the sapwood my thought was catalpa, but the catalpa that I’ve seen has bark like ash.
