20210924_122349.jpg 20201111_111656.jpg I began my hoarding with this downed tree. I don't know what it is but the wood split easily by hand with a maul. I cut and wheelbarrowed this out of the woods last fall. I just split a piece and the moisture content is around 19%.

    My guess is ash.

But, I don't have a good track record with guesses.

I don't think it's ash. But it could be. I think it could be basswood. How heavy is it?

If you pull the bark off, bet there’s the tell tale signs from ash borer.

Ash. Thats without looking at the other replies. If there was only one wood i could harvest it would be ash. Splits easily, dries in a year! Great first scrounge there BA!

If the tree was standing dead and has bark look for emerald ash borer evidence. They chew "D" shaped holes into the bark. The tunneling under the bark by the worms is quite prevalent. I have a pic but cant get it to load.

EDIT: didnt read prior posts before i posted.

Seems lighter than most cut wood that I have handled.

The moss growing on his rounds is very similar to what ive seen on the basswood ive scrounged.

That last pic I posted is basswood, doing a very good impression of ash.

I’m with Horkn on this one that looks like Little Leaf Lindenwood ( AKA basswood to some folks )
